Through sacrifice and companionship over more than 20 years, diva Celine Dion and her husband René Angélil, who is 26 years older than her, have written a beautiful love story, becoming a symbol of enduring love in the international entertainment industry.

Celine Dion is one of the divas with the most brilliant careers in the world of music. She once admitted to being very nervous about accepting a romantic relationship with René Angélil, who was not only 26 years older than her but had also been married twice before. However, their sincerity, support, and enduring love overcame all prejudices and became a beautiful legend in the entertainment industry.

Celine Dion (born 1968) grew up in a small town in Quebec, Canada, the youngest of 14 siblings. Her parents both loved music and formed a family band early on, taking their children to perform from a very young age.

At the age of five, Celine sang in public for the first time at her brother’s wedding. By the age of twelve, she had written her first song, “Ce n’était qu’un rêve,” with the help of her mother and brother. The recording was sent to music manager René Angélil, who later became her husband.

Completely convinced of the 12-year-old’s talent, René Angélil mortgaged his house to produce her debut album, La Voix du bon Dieu . In 1982, Celine won a gold medal at the Yamaha Music Festival (Japan) at the age of 14 and just one year later became the first Canadian artist to achieve gold certification in France.

In the following years, Celine Dion’s career continued to flourish. From “The Power of Love,” “Falling Into You,” to “My Heart Will Go On” —the legendary Titanic theme song —the singer consistently broke box office records and won numerous prestigious awards, including Grammys and Oscars.

At the height of her career, Celine Dion unexpectedly paused her career to care for her husband, who was battling cancer. In 2003, she returned with her A New Day… residency tour in Las Vegas, grossing over $400 million and ushering in a new trend in the performing arts industry.

René Angélil first met Celine Dion when she was just 12 years old. In 1987, the two began dating secretly and only publicly revealed their relationship five years later. In the dedication to the album The Colour of My Love , Celine wrote: “René, you are the color of love in me.”

The singer initially feared public reaction to her 26-year age difference. However, she affirmed that love helped them overcome all prejudice. In 1994, Celine Dion and René Angélil held their wedding at Notre Dame Cathedral in Montreal, which was televised live throughout Canada.

The marriage initially didn’t receive support from Celine’s family, but for her, René was always a wonderful man who sacrificed everything to support her career from its early days.

“The first time I told my mother that I had strong feelings for René, she tried everything to ‘kill’ him off and make me give up. At first, I was very upset and angry, but my mother tried to make me understand that this man had been married twice, had three children, and was irresponsible,” Celine recalled.

In 1998, René Angélil was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer. Celine Dion decided to temporarily stop working to care for her husband. After his recovery, the couple welcomed their first son in 2001 and twins Nelson and Eddy in 2010.

In 2013, her cancer recurred. Celine once again put her career on hold to be with her husband. René Angélil passed away in 2016 at the age of 73, leaving the singer with a profound sense of loss.

“I lost the love of my life at 48. I miss him most when he was healthy and happy, not the days he was in pain. I couldn’t hold him back because I was selfish. You have to learn to let the person you love go,” Celine Dion shared.

A month after her husband’s death, Dion returned to the Las Vegas stage and delivered a moving performance at the Billboard Music Awards, where she was honored with the Icon Award. Throughout her career, Céline Dion has won 254 awards, received 536 nominations, and has a net worth of approximately $800 million.

Two years after her husband’s death, Celine announced the cancellation of her performances at Caesars Palace to mourn René. “Witnessing your husband suffer for three years is not something you want to see. Now I know he is at peace, and we live with him in a different way. I see him every day through the eyes of our children,” the singer confided.

Since the death of her beloved husband, Celine has not dated anyone and has always cherished her deep love for René in her heart. In a 2019 interview, the singer confessed: “I still remember his scent, his hugs, and how he made me laugh. When I left the stage, the fans had gone home, and I returned to the hotel. I had no one to talk to that night. René will always be there for me.”

Recently, exactly 10 years after her husband’s death, the singer wrote on her personal page: “My love, 10 years without you feels like only one day has passed, but it also feels like each day has been a decade. 10 years without your loving hugs, but every day I still feel your presence.” The famous singer also posted a portrait of her late husband René Angélil on a black piano.

Not only Celine, but all three of her children also sent messages to their father. The post included messages from her eldest son, René-Charles Angélil (25 years old), and her twin sons, Nelson and Eddy (16 years old). “We miss you more than we can bear. But you taught us to be strong. We love you more each day, each year,” they wrote.

After her husband’s death, Celine Dion returned to the stage, continuing to perform and care for her children. However, the troubles didn’t end there, as in 2022 she publicly revealed she had Stiff-Person Syndrome – a rare disease that severely affects her mobility and singing ability.

The rare disease caused her immense physical pain and the fear of never being able to return to singing. However, Celine never gave up. Despite the incurable disease, the Canadian diva persevered with treatment and training. At the end of 2024, she moved audiences when she returned to the stage, receiving strong support from fans worldwide.

Currently, Celine Dion lives a private life, dedicating time to her family and health. Facing many challenges, the Canadian diva still harbors hope of continuing to sing, just as she has bravely overcome adversity over the past four decades.
