A five-year-old child has died and two younger children remain critically injured after a devastating incident near a fire trail in Australia’s Blue Mountains, where police say their 45-year-old mother was also discovered with injuries believed to have been self-inflicted.

Authorities are treating the woman as the main suspect as investigators work to determine why the family ended up at the isolated location in Valley Heights and what led to the tragedy.

Cyclists Stumble Across the Scene

The emergency unfolded Sunday morning near the entrance to a vacant block off Waratah Road.

Passing cyclists discovered the mother and three children and immediately began providing first aid while calling triple-0. By the time paramedics arrived, the five-year-old had died. The two other children, both under five, were rushed to hospital in critical condition alongside their mother.

Witness Julie Sukkar recalled seeing a woman lying in bushes and a baby in a car seat while another person desperately tried to help. She initially did not realize three children were involved.

Police Say Mother Is the Main Suspect

The boy’s death was the fourth alleged family violence-related murder to take place in New South Wales over one weekend, prompting renewed calls for politicians and police to do more to address the issue.ABC News (Australia)

Deputy Commissioner Peter McKenna said investigators believe the woman’s injuries were self-inflicted and that the alleged violence occurred near the spot where the vehicle had been parked.

Police have not established why the mother allegedly stopped at that particular location.

“I don’t have any rationale or reason as to why that was that location,” McKenna said.

The children’s father was reportedly at work when authorities informed him of what had happened, prompting him to rush to the scene.

Charges Could Follow if Mother Recovers

Police said the mother and the two surviving children remained in critical condition following the incident.

McKenna said authorities would seek to charge the woman with homicide if she recovers from her injuries. Investigators stressed that the inquiry was still in its early stages.

Police also said the family had not previously been on their radar for domestic violence, with no Apprehended Violence Orders in place.

A Devastating Weekend Across New South Wales

The Valley Heights case came during what McKenna described as one of the most tragic periods he had experienced during his career.

Police were dealing with four separate alleged family-violence deaths across New South Wales over the weekend, including cases involving victims in Wagga, Bondi Beach and Mole River.

McKenna described the weekend as “nothing short of horrific” and said officers who attended the scenes — including those who personally tried to save victims — would receive welfare support.
