Ohio Mother of 16 Appears in Court as Attorney Raises Questions About Postpartum Care

Elizabeth Siders, the Ohio mother at the center of a disturbing child-endangerment case involving her large family, returned to court Wednesday with fresh attention surrounding both her appearance and her attorney’s claims about her physical and mental health.

Siders, 34, appeared in Vinton County Common Pleas Court in Hamden wearing an orange jail uniform and pleaded not guilty to 19 counts, including child-endangerment charges and sex-related allegations involving an underage relative. During the hearing, she was repeatedly seen holding her noticeably swollen midsection, fueling speculation that she may be pregnant again.

Her attorney, Thomas Stolly, declined to confirm or deny the speculation.

“I can’t address that at this time,” he said when questioned about whether his client was pregnant.

Attorney Points to Years of Pregnancy and Limited Medical Care

Rather than address the pregnancy speculation directly, Stolly focused the court’s attention on Siders’ history and argued that years of repeated pregnancies without adequate postpartum and medical care may have affected her mental health.

“We have an individual… who was married at age 15 who has essentially been pregnant for the better part of two decades,” Stolly told the court.

He said Siders had never fully experienced a postpartum period and had not regularly received the type of medical care he believed appropriate for someone who had given birth to so many children. He also raised concerns about the possible effects of her marrying at such a young age and remaining within the Siders household environment.

Her defense has previously questioned whether Siders is mentally competent to stand trial.

16 Children Removed From the Family Home

The criminal case emerged after authorities removed Siders and her husband Gary Siders II’s 16 children from their Hamden home in June.

Siders, her husband and his parents, Christina Siders and Gary Siders Sr., were each charged with 16 felony counts related to child endangerment and neglect.

Authorities described deeply troubling conditions inside the home. Investigators said the children had never been enrolled in school and that some had severe communication difficulties, with some unable to speak at all. The oldest child, 18, was described by investigators as developmentally disabled and unable to write her own name.

Authorities have alleged that children ranging in age from 1 to 18 had been living in isolation and extremely unsanitary conditions, including inside a cramped 12-by-12-foot room.

Additional Charges Added to the Case

The case expanded last month when Siders and Gary II were indicted on additional charges, including sexual battery and two counts of unlawful sexual contact with a minor. Siders has pleaded not guilty to the new allegations.

Her latest courtroom appearance also drew attention because she was not handcuffed. According to the article, Ohio law prohibits law enforcement from shackling pregnant women in certain circumstances, while Siders’ co-defendants had previously appeared restrained. That difference further fueled speculation about her condition, though her attorney has not confirmed a pregnancy.

Siders previously sought permission through her attorney to see her children, but the court has maintained a strict no-contact order.

She remains in custody on a combined $550,000 bond as the criminal proceedings continue.
