The death of Chad Lowe’s 13-year-old daughter Fiona has been confirmed as suicide by a medical examiner’s report, as her uncle Rob Lowe rushed to be by his brother’s side.
Fiona died at a Los Angeles hospital on Tuesday, September 29, just weeks before her 14th birthday in November.
Her parents, actor Chad Lowe, 58, and TV producer Kim Painter, 52, announced the devastating loss that same day, describing their daughter as “the light of our lives.”
“We are deeply heartbroken by the loss of our beloved Fiona,” the family said.
“She was a loving young girl who was smart, creative and loved to dance. She was adored by her sisters and she was deeply loved by her parents. In fact, she was the light of our lives.”
They added that Fiona’s death had devastated the entire family and asked for prayers and privacy as they grieved.
The family’s statement also included information for the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
Fiona remembered as a well-liked student
Fiona’s school has since contacted parents and made counseling resources available to students and staff affected by her death.
A source told Page Six that Fiona was a “very-well liked student” with many friends.
She was the second-oldest of Chad and Kim’s three daughters. The couple also share Mabel, 17, and Nixie, 10.
Rob Lowe puts Hollywood aside to support his brother
As Chad and his family cope with the loss, his older brother Rob Lowe, 62, has reportedly made being there for them his priority.
According to a source cited by journalist Rob Shuter, the actor “dropped everything” after learning what had happened.
“Chad is his little brother, and the second he heard, Hollywood stopped mattering,” the source said. “There was nowhere else Rob was going to be except Chad’s side.”
Another source emphasized that Rob cannot take away his brother’s grief, but can make sure Chad does not have to endure it alone.
“Rob knows there are no words that can fix this,” the source said. “He can’t take away Chad’s grief. What he can do is be present, protect his brother and make absolutely certain he never has to face this alone.”
A heartbreaking final birthday tribute
One of Chad’s Instagram posts from less than a year before Fiona’s death has taken on new significance.
On November 15, 2025, he shared a photo of his smiling daughter as she officially entered her teenage years.

“Celebrating Fiona officially becoming a teen today!!” Chad wrote.
“Keep dancing through life FiBear! Love you soooo much!!”
The post captured Chad celebrating his daughter’s love of dance and marking what should have been the beginning of her teenage years.
