University of Georgia Student Survives Eighth-Floor Fall After Dancing Near Open Window

University of Georgia student Kristin Sargent miraculously survived a fall from the eighth floor of an apartment building, according to her father.

A 21-year-old University of Georgia student is recovering in intensive care after surviving a terrifying fall from an eighth-floor apartment window in Athens, Georgia.

Kristin Sargent, a senior studying finance and marketing at UGA, suffered several broken bones in the Saturday evening incident. Despite the severity of the fall, her father, Richard Sargent, said his daughter was conscious and already expressing disbelief that she had survived.

“She was talking to one of her friends and saying, ‘Hey, I’m alive. I can’t believe it,’” he said.

Police say the fall appears accidental

Officers were dispatched to The Rambler apartment building on West Broad Street at approximately 7:37 p.m., according to a police report.

Responding officer Erik Ellison said witnesses told investigators that Sargent had been dancing on either a couch or an air mattress positioned near an open window when she apparently fell through the screen.

She plunged from the eighth floor into the building’s courtyard, where the pool deck is located on the second-floor level.

Investigators found evidence suggesting Sargent struck a metal bench during the fall. According to the police report, there was blood on the bench cushion and one of its armrests had broken off.

Witnesses also reportedly suggested that a lounge chair may have helped break her fall before she reached the ground.

Sargent was transported to the hospital, where investigators later interviewed her and other witnesses. Police said the information gathered indicated that the incident was accidental, although forensic investigators processed the scene and the investigation remained ongoing when the report was written.

“At this time it appears that the victim will survive,” Ellison wrote.

Family rushed to Georgia after receiving frightening call

Sargent is recovering in intensive care with several broken bones after investigators said she fell out of a window while dancing on a couch in Athens, Georgia.

Sargent’s family traveled from Virginia after learning what had happened.

Her father recalled receiving word from someone who told the family: “Oh my God, Kristin’s had a tough fall.”

Richard described his daughter as “pretty badly beaten up,” but said the family understood how fortunate they were given the circumstances.

“She’s a good fighter, and so she’s going to be OK,” he said.

The incident occurred after the Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 41-13 earlier Saturday. Richard noted that many students would have been celebrating the victory, though he did not say what specifically caused his daughter’s fall.

Apartment residents receive safety reminder

Following the incident, management at The Rambler reportedly sent residents a message reminding them that windows throughout the complex are equipped with safety limiters.

Residents were warned not to tamper with, remove or disengage those devices. Authorities, however, had not determined whether the limiter on the window involved in Sargent’s fall was engaged or whether it had any connection to what happened.

The apartment complex said it was cooperating with investigators.

However, authorities have not said whether the window Kristin Sargent fell from had a safety limiter engaged or if it played a role in the incident, according to the outlet.

“Our thoughts are with our resident, and we are wishing for a speedy recovery,” a representative said. “We are continuing to gather information and review the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

Back at the building, Sargent’s friends and fellow students filled a large poster with messages wishing her well.

For her family, the remarkable fact remained that despite an eight-floor plunge and serious injuries, the 21-year-old survived.

“We’re lucky that she’s alive and we’re blessed,” her father said.
