The Two Royal Women Who Could Help William and Harry Reconnect — and They’re Not Kate or Meghan

As Prince William and Prince Harry continue to maintain a distant relationship, attention has turned to two members of Princess Diana’s family who have remained connected to both brothers for decades: Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes.

Unlike some members of the Spencer family, Diana’s older sisters have generally kept a low public profile. Yet their longstanding relationships with William and Harry have placed them in a unique position within the family.

Diana’s sisters have remained close to both princes

Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes are two of Princess Diana’s three sisters. Both have maintained ties with their nephews since Diana’s death in 1997.

Sarah has been seen supporting William at important occasions, including his 2024 appearance at the Royal Air Force College in Cranwell. She has also remained close to Harry, who attended the funeral of her brother-in-law, Lord Robert Fellowes, in August 2024.

Jane has likewise remained part of important moments in Harry’s life. She attended his 2018 wedding to Meghan Markle and was among the members of Diana’s family who welcomed him during his return to the UK for Lord Fellowes’ funeral.

The brothers were both present at the 2024 funeral, although reports said they kept their distance and did not appear to speak to one another.

Their shared connection to Diana’s family, however, meant that the event brought William and Harry into the same room despite their strained relationship.

A quiet role in the family

Sarah and Jane have generally taken a different approach from their brother, Charles Spencer, who has spoken publicly about Diana and her legacy on numerous occasions.

The sisters have largely stayed out of the public debate surrounding the royal family. Their connection with William and Harry has instead been maintained through family occasions and personal relationships.

Sarah attended both princes’ weddings and has continued to appear at significant family events. Jane has also remained close to Harry and his family, including receiving a prominent acknowledgment in his memoir, Spare.

That private approach could be particularly significant given the brothers’ complicated relationship.

Rather than publicly discussing the dispute or taking sides, Diana’s sisters have been able to maintain individual relationships with both men.

The 2024 funeral offered a glimpse of their position

Lord Robert Fellowes, who died in 2024, was married to Lady Jane and had served as a private secretary to Queen Elizabeth II.

His funeral became one of the rare occasions when William and Harry were both present at the same family gathering since their relationship had become strained.

Reports at the time noted that Harry appeared particularly close to the Spencer side of his family during the visit. He spent time with Lady Jane, Lady Sarah and Charles Spencer and later stayed at Althorp, the Spencer family home associated with Diana.

Meanwhile, Sarah had separately demonstrated her support for William when she attended his RAF graduation ceremony in September 2024.

The two sisters therefore occupy an unusual position: they remain connected to both sides of the family without being directly involved in the brothers’ dispute.

Could Diana’s sisters play a role in a future reunion?

There is no indication that Sarah or Jane have arranged a reconciliation between William and Harry, and reports about their private efforts should be treated as claims rather than established fact.

Still, their longstanding relationships with both princes make them notable figures whenever the possibility of a family rapprochement is discussed.

Their connection also carries a deeper significance. Both women knew Diana as their sister and have remained part of the lives of her sons since they were young.

For William and Harry, that shared family history could provide a natural connection independent of their respective households and public roles.

Whether that connection will eventually bring the brothers closer remains uncertain. For now, Sarah McCorquodale and Jane Fellowes continue to maintain their relationships with both princes largely away from the spotlight.
