From Triple Heart Bypass to ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ Champion: 75-Year-Old Farmer Shares Life-Saving Health Warning
Having survived a critical triple heart bypass surgery, Welsh farmer Hugh Thomas went on to win Britain’s Got Talent as part of a 34-member choir—and he is now using his platform to urge others never to dismiss early warning signs.
At 75 years old, Pembrokeshire sunflower farmer Hugh Thomas made history this past May when The Hawkstone Farmers’ Choir—assembled by television host Jeremy Clarkson—was crowned the champion of Britain’s Got Talent. Behind the triumphant performance lies Thomas’s remarkable journey back from the brink of life-threatening cardiovascular disease.
1. A Silent Threat and an Urgent Surgery
In February 2022, at age 71, Thomas felt generally healthy aside from experiencing mild breathlessness during heavy exertion. Believing it was lingering fatigue from a prior bout of Covid-19, he almost brushed it off.
-
A Life-Saving Push: Persuaded by his wife, Rachel, to undergo comprehensive medical checks, Thomas went in for tests. An angiogram quickly detected severe arterial blockages.
-
The Diagnosis: Diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, Thomas was scheduled for immediate triple bypass surgery to restore blood flow to his heart.
-
Intensive Recovery: Following the operation at Morriston Hospital in Swansea, Thomas spent six days in intensive care before beginning a full, steady recovery that now requires only annual checkups.
“I really didn’t expect that because I had no pain, just a little bit short of breath if I was doing heavy exercise,” Thomas reflected on the initial shock of the diagnosis.
2. A Whirlwind Run to the ‘BGT’ Crown
With his health restored, Thomas answered a casting call in April 2025 for a singing initiative organized by Clarkson’s Farm host Jeremy Clarkson:
-
Earning a Spot: Thomas was selected as one of 34 farmers out of more than 500 applicants to form The Hawkstone Farmers’ Choir.
-
Golden Buzzer Sensation: The choir made an immediate impression during their October 2025 audition, earning a coveted Golden Buzzer that launched them straight into the spotlight.
-
Live Final Triumph: On May 30, the choir delivered an emotional performance of their original song during the live final. Judge Simon Cowell praised the act as “absolutely stunning, heartfelt, and joyous,” while an emotional Clarkson cheered them on from the audience.
3. A Urgent Message for the Farming Community
According to the British Heart Foundation (BHF), cardiovascular disease claims a life in the UK every three minutes. Thomas is now vocal about dismantling the stoic attitude toward personal health common in rural industries:
-
Breaking the “Tough It Out” Habit: “When it comes to health, farmers generally hold back and say: ‘Oh, it’s nothing, it’ll go in a day or so… put a plaster on it.’ People are not keen to go to the doctors, and they leave it, and sometimes they leave it until it’s too late,” Thomas warned.
-
A Timely Reminder: His wife, Rachel, agreed, noting that many in the industry avoid medical visits until conditions turn critical.
Thomas’s story stands as a powerful reminder that listening to one’s body and seeking timely medical advice can save lives—and pave the way for extraordinary second chances.
