Adrian’s hand remained suspended inches from Sophie’s necklace.

Then he lowered it.

“I need you to tell me where she got that pendant.”

Claire looked at the man standing in front of her, then at Vanessa and the security guards surrounding them.

“My husband gave it to her.”

Adrian went completely still.

“What was his name?”

Claire hesitated.

“Daniel Bennett.”

The name changed everything.

Adrian took one step backward.

Vanessa stared at him. “Adrian?”

He ignored her.

“When did Daniel die?”

“Three years ago.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

For several seconds, the lobby was silent.

Claire tightened her arms around her daughter.

“What did you say?”

Adrian looked at Claire.

“Why were they holding her?”

Nobody answered.

“You fired a competent employee because of her body?”

Vanessa’s confidence faltered.

“I was protecting the brand.”

“No,” Adrian said. “You embarrassed it.”

He ordered security to step away from Claire immediately.

Vanessa tried to interrupt.
