Period drama based on best-selling book on ITV tonight as fans beg for more
The Tudor-era murder mystery starring Arthur Hughes and Sean Bean airs on ITV4 tonight after fans praised the ‘atmospheric’ drama and called for more episodes

Fans are clamouring for more episodes of this captivating period whodunit.
Set during Henry VIII’s reign in the 16th century, Shardlake draws from CJ Sansom’s acclaimed novel series. Featuring Arthur Hughes and BAFTA Award-winner Sean Bean, this historical murder mystery enthralled audiences upon its 2024 debut.
Tragically, author Sansom passed away mere days before the premiere, though his extensive back catalogue has devoted fans hoping for further screen adaptations.
Comprising only four episodes, the series received critical praise but was ultimately axed last January. Viewers can judge the merits of the revival campaign when it broadcasts on ITV4 this evening.
Hunchbacked lawyer Master Matthew Shardlake (Hughes) is dispatched by Thomas Cromwell (Bean) to probe a commissioner’s death at a monastery in the isolated town of Scarnsea, reports the Mirror.

Against the backdrop of the 1536 dissolution of the monasteries, victim Robin Singleton met a violent end whilst gathering evidence to shutter St. Donatus monastery.
Throughout the unfolding narrative, Shardlake, who confronts prejudice as a disabled legal practitioner in 16th-century England, must unmask the perpetrator.
The drama delves into corruption and retribution whilst revealing concealed truths as Shardlake endeavours to secure the monastery’s surrender to the Crown for Cromwell.
Helmed by Justin Chadwick and written by Stephen Butchard, the four-part series made its debut on Disney+ in 2024.

Tragically, the novelist behind the original works passed away just four days before it was released.
The adaptation received praise from critics and was shot across Hungary, Romania and Austria. Monastery sequences were captured in several castles, including one in Transylvania, contributing to the four-part drama’s acclaimed ambience.
Despite its success, Shardlake was axed in January 2025 without a second series being ordered, leaving devotees disappointed.
On Rotten Tomatoes, where it boasts a commendable 81% rating, viewers have shared their reactions.
One five-star reviewer said: “I was absolutely glued to this and sorry to hear there won’t be another season. Great storyline and acting. I think if this continued, the audience would grow as news of it got out. I do love history, especially the Tudor times so this was a bonus for me.”
Another praised multiple elements, including the visual appeal: “Great show. Atmospheric, beautifully shot and strong writing make this worth a watch,” they noted. “Definitely requires a second season to round out the characters.”

The series, which initially broadcast on Disney, was not commissioned for a second season.
Shardlake airs on Sunday 15 February on ITV4 at 11.10pm.
