War dramas have always been popular with viewers, especially when they are based on real events and tell powerful human stories. But with so many options on Netflix, it can be hard to know what’s actually worth watching. But there’s one series that keeps coming up again and again, with viewers calling it a “masterpiece” and even “the best World War 2 show ever made”.

It has also picked up an impressive 95% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a solid 76% audience rating. Many who have watched it say it stands out from the crowd, not just for its story but for how it makes you feel while watching. And while it might not be as widely talked about as some of the bigger titles on the platform, those who have seen it say it’s something really special.

Some have even described it as a hidden gem that deserves far more attention. That series is Transatlantic, a historical drama miniseries available on Netflix.

Transatlantic premiered on Netflix on April 7, 2023, and was created by Anna Winger and Daniel Hendler. It is based on the 2019 novel The Flight Portfolio by Julie Orringer.

The story focuses on the real-life Emergency Rescue Committee, which operated in Marseille, France, as well as Spain and Portugal in 1940 after the fall of France.

The group helped artists, intellectuals and refugees escape Nazi-occupied Europe.

The series features a strong cast including Gillian Jacobs as Mary Jayne Gold, Lucas Englander as Albert Hirschman and Cory Michael Smith as Varian Fry.

Another added: “Best World War 2 series ever. Masterpiece of the highest order. This series both entertains and transports you, while managing to be insightful and inspiring.”

A third wrote: “This is art. And not in a boring, we-desperately-wanted-awards-and-everyone-is-moody way.

“It is art in a way that it makes you feel, and it makes you think, which nowadays shows rarely do. Thank you to anyone who had anything to do with making this. These types of things are why I fell in love with cinema.”

Someone else commented: “With so much television available right now, this show rises above as something special. You will fall in love with the characters and the gorgeous scenery, all wrapped into a delicious 1940s era period piece.”

Transatlantic is available to stream on Netflix.
