Helaena Targaryen‘s story has come to a tragic end in the season 3 finale of House of the Dragon, with Phia Saban‘s character dying after falling from a window at the Red Keep.

Her death follows a season in which Helaena’s prophetic abilities became increasingly important to the story. Unlike many of the Targaryens caught up in the civil war, she has largely avoided taking sides, instead retreating into her visions and trying to make sense of events she appears to know are coming.

The finale brings that arc to its conclusion while leaving behind one of the episode’s biggest clues about what awaits Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Helaena’s final vision takes shape

Before her death, Helaena completes a large tapestry that contains images connected to events throughout the series. Among them is an image of Helaena herself, reflecting the fate that eventually comes to pass.

The tapestry also depicts Rhaenyra wearing a crown in front of the Iron Throne. At first glance, the image appears to confirm Rhaenyra’s long-held belief that she is destined to rule Westeros.

There is a darker side to the image, however. Rhaenyra appears covered in blood while flames rise behind the throne, suggesting that gaining the crown will come at a devastating cost.

The imagery aligns with the fate described in George R.R. Martin‘s Fire & Blood, although the television adaptation has already shown that it is willing to alter how major events unfold.

Helaena’s death itself also differs in some details from the book while retaining the same broad outcome. In the series, she is pregnant when she dies and has been under enormous pressure after being imprisoned and enduring the consequences of the Targaryen conflict.

Phia Saban closes Helaena’s story

Saban, who has played Helaena since the beginning of the series, described the finale as a significant moment in her time on the show. The season also finally gave her character the opportunity to ride her dragon Dreamfyre, another major milestone for the actor.

The character’s final storyline was shaped specifically for the television adaptation. Fire & Blood provides the destination for Helaena’s story but the series has reworked parts of her journey, particularly her prophetic abilities and the circumstances surrounding her final days.

Helaena’s death also deepens Rhaenyra‘s increasingly isolated position. By the end of the finale, the queen is facing growing resistance while the wider Targaryen conflict moves towards its final stage.

The season 3 finale also features the Battle of Tumbleton, where Ormund Hightower and other major figures meet their ends as the war escalates. The episode leaves the Targaryen factions badly weakened and sets up the show’s fourth and final season.

House of the Dragon is scheduled to return for its fourth and final season in 2028, meaning viewers now face a lengthy wait to see how the remaining prophecies and the Targaryen civil war are resolved.
