Crime drama is ‘breathe of fresh air’ perfect for fans of Only Murders in the Building on BBC now
Viewers have given this ‘funny’ British crime show a near-perfect rating of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes for its beloved ‘slap-stick comedy’ – solving crimes with plenty of glitz and glamour

Full of fun and comedy, and yet plenty of crime, this period drama draws comparisons to the likes of Only Murders in the Building for its unserious take on solving a murder case.
If you love period dramas and you love crime dramas, this film combines the two seamlessly, so much so that fans have given it nothing but rave reviews. In turn, the 2023 film has landed itself a near-perfect score across reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, standing at an impressive 98%.
The Crime Is Mine is a French crime comedy, set in the 1930s, which follows a fictional famous actress, who rises in notoriety after being acquitted of murder in self-defence.
Its unique story derives loosely from the original 1934 play Mon crime but isn’t entirely true to the original storyline. In fact, the play has proved its popularity, having seen two prior adaptations in American cinema with True Confession in 1937 and Cross My Heart in 1946.

One fan of the film wrote in a Rotten Tomatoes review: “Ridiculously silly, absurd and funny. What a joy! It’s light-hearted and a bit of a slapstick comedy. It’s a snowball; it starts lightly fun, but at the end, you just cannot laugh at it.”
The star of the show is Madeleine, a poor actress in Paris, played by Nadia Tereszkiewicz, who is accused of murdering a sleazy producer, but thanks to her friend that works as a lawyer, she finds a way to defend her case. Although, their scam for fame is later revealed when a fellow movie star exposes the truth behind their death.
Joining her on screen is Rebecca Marder as Pauline Mauléon, the lawyer, alongside Isabelle Huppert as Odette Chaumette, Fabrice Luchini as Gustave Rabusset and Dany Boon as Fernand Palmarède. The film’s entirety is spoken in French, with subtitles provided, although for many English-speaking fans, this didn’t seem to affect their viewing experience.

One person shared: “This film is such great fun – witty, funny and full of big personalities. Yes, it’s in French with subtitles.
“That doesn’t take away from the enjoyment at all. Watching this film left me feeling like I do after watching a truly excellent play – it is so deeply satisfying. I hope it is made available more widely.”
Another added that they felt the film was “a breath of fresh air” all while being “silly, glorious and beautifully acted”. They continued to write: “The best hour and forty-two minutes I have spent watching something in a very long time. A welcome break from the usual dross.”
It’s worth mentioning that The Crime Is Mine is also considered by many to be aesthetically pleasing with its glamourous fashion and set designs, set against the romantic backdrop of Paris in an exciting era for film and theatre.
The 2023 film version of the 1930s story is available to stream now for free on BBC iPlayer. Alternatively, it can be rented on both Apple TV and Amazon Prime.
