Child’s Body Found in Pond During Search for Missing 3-Year-Old Noah Woods

A desperate search for missing three-year-old Noah Woods ended in tragedy after police recovered the body of a child from a fishing pond near the playground where the little boy was last seen.

Noah, who was non-verbal and had partial hearing loss, disappeared on Tuesday afternoon while with his grandfather at an under-5s playground in Merriam Close, Brantham, Suffolk.

His disappearance triggered a huge search involving police officers, specialist divers, helicopters, emergency crews and large numbers of local volunteers. But on Wednesday evening, Superintendent Tom Pearse announced the devastating development.

Police said formal identification had not yet taken place, but Noah’s family had been informed.

Noah Disappeared Within Minutes of Leaving the Playground

CCTV released during the search showed Noah at the playground at approximately 2:37 p.m. on Tuesday.

The three-year-old is understood to have become separated from his grandfather before running down an alleyway beside the park. The path led toward a newly built housing development and Decoy Pond, a fishing lake approximately 0.2 miles away.

The surrounding landscape made the search particularly challenging. Woodland, thick bushes and fields stretch toward the railway line between Ipswich and London, while the River Stour lies beyond the tracks.

Because Noah was non-verbal and partially deaf, police also warned volunteers that calling his name might not produce a response.

As the hours passed without a confirmed sighting, concern for the little boy intensified.

An Entire Community Joined the Search

The disappearance prompted an extraordinary response across the area.

Police dog units and helicopters were deployed, while Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service, Suffolk Lowland Search & Rescue, HM Coastguard and other emergency teams assisted.

Residents were urged to check their gardens, sheds and other places where a small child might have taken shelter. Volunteers searched fields and riverbanks, with many continuing by torchlight after darkness fell.

Firefighters were also seen checking beneath vehicles and looking over garden walls near the playground.

Attention increasingly focused on Decoy Pond, where specialist Metropolitan Police divers were brought in to search the water.

On Wednesday evening, the search took a tragic turn.

Superintendent Pearse confirmed that officers had recovered the body of a child from Decoy Pond.

Formal identification was still pending when police announced the discovery, but Noah’s family had already been told about the development.

Pearse said the thoughts of officers were first and foremost with Noah’s family and everyone who knew him. He also acknowledged the enormous response from members of the public who had joined emergency crews in trying to find the three-year-old.

The impact of the announcement was immediately visible among those who had spent hours searching. Volunteers were seen crying and comforting one another after the police briefing.

Shortly before 5:40 p.m., a forensics van was seen heading toward the pond where specialist divers had been working.

Father Had Begged Searchers Not to Give Up

The discovery came after Noah’s father, Rhys Woods, made an emotional appeal as the search stretched into another day.

Rhys explained that his son was only mildly autistic and had partial hearing loss but was capable of everyday tasks. Knowing Noah’s personality, he feared the little boy might have travelled farther than searchers initially believed.

He therefore urged volunteers who were able to continue looking to expand their search farther from the original area.

As another night approached without his son, Rhys pleaded with the community not to stop searching, saying he could not bear the thought of Noah being outside alone.

“He is out there somewhere and I appreciate every single one of you,” he said.

Those words came before police delivered the heartbreaking update from Decoy Pond — bringing a massive community search that had united emergency services and hundreds of volunteers to the most devastating possible turn.
