A 7-year-old girl died after being attacked by a stranger on a Chicago street in broad daylight, with bystanders rushing to intervene and holding the alleged attacker until police arrived.
Edimari Hernandez Chacon was walking in the South Side neighborhood of Chatham shortly before noon when an unknown woman allegedly approached her from behind and attacked her with a sharp object.
Surveillance footage reportedly shows Edimari walking hand-in-hand with another woman moments before the incident. Witnesses can then be seen rushing toward the scene to help.
Bystanders Hold Suspect Until Police Arrive
Edimari was taken to a nearby children’s hospital, where she was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon.
The alleged attacker, whose identity had not been released, was detained at the scene by members of the public until officers arrived.
She was later taken into police custody after receiving hospital treatment for injuries reportedly sustained while she was being detained.
Authorities had not disclosed any known relationship between Edimari and the woman, and it remained unclear what may have prompted the apparently random attack.
Community Left Reeling
The killing has devastated residents of the Chatham neighborhood, particularly parents struggling to comprehend how a young child could lose her life during an ordinary daytime walk.
One local mother said the tragedy hit especially hard because her own daughter is the same age as Edimari.
Alderman Michelle Harris also expressed her grief over the killing and praised the people who immediately stepped in.
She said the quick intervention by bystanders helped detain the suspect and may have prevented anyone else from being harmed.
Questions Remain Over Motive
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Edimari’s death.
At the time of the initial reports, no motive had been announced and the alleged attacker had not been publicly identified.
What began as an ordinary walk through a Chicago neighborhood had unfolded within moments into a tragedy — leaving a 7-year-old dead, a woman in custody and a community searching for an explanation.
