Karoline Heintz was preparing to begin a new chapter as a college student and Division II soccer player at PennWest University. Instead, hours after meeting with her boyfriend following a family gathering, the incoming freshman was found dead inside her own Jeep near the university’s California campus.

Police have charged her boyfriend, Royce Mosher, with criminal homicide and several other offenses. His mother, Rachel Mosher, was also arrested after investigators alleged that she helped her son clean evidence and move the vehicle containing Heintz’s body.

Authorities have not announced a motive. Investigators say Mosher allegedly told his mother that a “demon” had taken over and told him to attack Heintz, but officials have not said whether any mental-health history played a role.

Heintz had attended a family party before meeting Mosher at his father’s home in North Strabane Township, Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania State Trooper Rocco Gagliardi said the young couple sat inside Heintz’s vehicle and discussed their relationship, including how it might continue as she entered college.

According to Gagliardi, the conversation eventually deteriorated.

Investigators allege Mosher told Heintz that he had something for her, went into the house and retrieved a large kitchen knife. Police say he then returned to the vehicle and stabbed Heintz in the chest.

Authorities allege Mosher subsequently placed Heintz in the rear cargo area of her Jeep Cherokee and drove to his mother’s home in Beallsville.

Investigators say what happened after Heintz’s death became another major part of the case.

According to Gagliardi, Mosher and his mother allegedly attempted to clean clothing and the Jeep and remove blood evidence.

Police say the Jeep was then driven toward California Borough, with Rachel Mosher following in another vehicle.

Meanwhile, Heintz’s family became concerned when she failed to check in as expected after she was supposed to return to her dorm. They contacted authorities and requested a wellness check.

Investigators subsequently used location information from Heintz’s phone to trace her to an area near the California Borough Library.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. Thursday, officers located the abandoned Jeep. Heintz was found inside its rear cargo area, according to police.

Authorities arrested Royce Mosher and Rachel Mosher on Thursday morning.

Investigators allege Royce told his mother that a “demon” had taken over and told him to stab Heintz. Police have not established that statement as an explanation for what happened, and Gagliardi said officials had not identified a motive or determined whether mental-health history was a factor.

Royce Mosher was charged with criminal homicide, two counts of tampering with evidence, two counts of abuse of a corpse and obstruction.

He was later seen being escorted from a police station in handcuffs and a white jail uniform.

Rachel Mosher, 57, was charged with tampering with evidence, obstruction, hindering apprehension and abuse of a corpse.

As she was escorted to a police vehicle, Rachel denied responsibility before expressing remorse to Heintz’s family.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “That my son took a life.”

A college and soccer career that was just beginning

Heintz had graduated from Peters Township High School in June.

Heintz had graduated from Peters Township High School in June and was preparing to start her first year at PennWest University’s California campus.

She had committed to play Division II soccer for the California Vulcans, whose season was approaching as the new academic year began.

The timing made her death particularly devastating for the university community. PennWest’s official schedule shows its 2026 Welcome Weekend beginning Aug. 21, with fall classes starting Aug. 24 — meaning Heintz died just as incoming students were arriving to begin college life.

PennWest’s California campus is part of the university’s three-campus system and is located roughly 35 miles from Pittsburgh. Athletics remain a prominent part of campus life, with California competing as the Vulcans.

“PennWest University is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Karoline Heintz, who was a first-year student at the California campus,” the university said in the statement provided in reports about the case. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends, and all those affected by this tragedy.”

Her team had been scheduled to play its first game on Aug. 29.

Instead of beginning her freshman season and college career, Heintz’s death has now become the subject of a homicide investigation involving the boyfriend she met shortly before she was killed and, authorities allege, his mother’s actions afterward.

Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the killing, including what caused the couple’s conversation to escalate. No motive had been publicly established in the information released by authorities.
