King Charles and Prince William Urged to Present a United Front Over Prince Harry’s Future U.K. Visits

Prince Harry is expected to return to the U.K. in September for engagements with his patronage, WellChild, following his visit earlier this month with Meghan Markle and their children.

But ahead of his return, a royal commentator has warned that King Charles and Prince William need to agree on a coordinated approach to Harry’s future visits — both publicly and privately — to prevent the long-running family tensions from creating further difficulties for the monarchy.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told The Daily Mail that the King and the Prince of Wales should adopt a “joint approach” when dealing with Harry’s trips back to Britain.

He argued that the two senior royals need to present a “united front,” warning that the institution cannot afford deep divisions between Charles and William.

Concerns Over Harry’s Return

Harry’s latest U.K. visit earlier in July was followed by reports surrounding arrangements for his security and accommodation.

He is now due to return in September to carry out engagements on behalf of WellChild, one of the charities he continues to support.

Fitzwilliams said William is understood to be “concerned” that Harry’s presence could potentially “overshadow the valuable work the monarchy is doing in the media.”

He also described a falling-out between Charles and William as potentially the most damaging outcome for the monarchy, given William’s position as its future alongside his family.

“The most disastrous thing that could happen to the monarchy would be a falling out between King Charles and Prince William who, together with his family, is its future,” Fitzwilliams said.

Charles Wants to See His Grandchildren

The commentator acknowledged that Charles “understandably wanted to see his grandchildren.”

Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet’s July visit included a private meeting with Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House on July 10. It was the first time Meghan and the children had been in the U.K. since 2022.

According to Hello!, Harry left the meeting “very happy and really energized.”

Fitzwilliams said the Sussexes have remained personally silent since then, although reports and briefings surrounding the situation have continued.

He also suggested that Harry and Meghan are likely to plan further trips because they want Charles to have more opportunities to see his grandchildren.

“That is totally understandable,” he said, adding that arrangements for accommodation and, hopefully, security should be better organized in the future.

A More Private Approach Could Help

Fitzwilliams believes the situation could benefit from greater privacy.

He said it would be preferable if future visits could take place privately, “with no one knowing,” suggesting that this could create an opportunity for genuine progress away from the intense public attention surrounding the family.

While he acknowledged there is hope that one of the world’s most public family disputes can gradually be resolved, he stressed that Charles and William must agree on how Harry’s future visits are handled.

That agreement, he said, needs to exist both publicly and privately.

“When there are disputes between families, reconciliation should always be welcomed,” Fitzwilliams said, while emphasizing that “the institution cannot afford deep divisions between them [Charles and William].”

Why William and Charles Need to Speak With One Voice

According to Fitzwilliams, the issue extends beyond Harry’s individual visits.

He argued that Charles and William need to demonstrate unity on substantive matters affecting the monarchy, because visible disagreement could damage the institution and leave the public uncertain about its direction.

“Since it is essential for the future of the monarchy that they [Charles and William] speak with one voice on substantive issues, this is damaging the monarchy and confusing for the public,” he said.

The concern is therefore not simply about whether Harry returns to Britain, but about how those visits are managed and how the royal family responds to them.

Could Harry Stay at Buckingham Palace?

There has also been speculation about where Harry could stay during his September visit.

Reports have suggested that Charles may have offered Harry the opportunity to stay at Buckingham Palace after a similar arrangement fell through during his earlier trip.

Royal biographer Robert Jobson told The Sun that the developments appeared to indicate “a gradual process” in which relations could be improving.

For now, Harry’s September return remains another potential test for the family — and, according to Fitzwilliams, one that makes coordination between Charles and William particularly important.
