Hannah Waddingham has given one of Delia Smith’s most unforgettable football moments an unexpected new life on Ted Lasso.

In the latest episode of Apple TV’s fourth season, Waddingham’s character, Rebecca Welton, finds herself on the pitch during an AFC Richmond match and delivers a speech that unmistakably echoes the TV chef’s famous 2005 outburst at Norwich City.

The scene comes at a particularly difficult moment for Rebecca, who is struggling emotionally after her Dutch boyfriend suggests that they take a break.

Rebecca’s Emotional Night Takes a Turn

Heartbroken, Rebecca turns to alcohol while watching the AFC Richmond women’s team play Chelsea.

By half-time, she is drunk enough to abandon what was supposed to be a polite speech to the crowd and instead begins calling out to the supporters.

Rebecca repeatedly shouts “Where are you?”, closely recreating the rhythm and spirit of Delia Smith’s infamous football address.

And as the speech reaches its conclusion, Rebecca delivers the line that football fans immediately recognise: “Let’s be having you!”

The moment is clearly intended as a playful tribute to one of the most memorable scenes in English football culture.

The Real Moment That Inspired It

Delia Smith created the original moment on February 28, 2005, during Norwich City’s Premier League match against Manchester City.

Smith, who was Norwich City’s majority shareholder at the time, took a microphone during half-time and appealed directly to the home supporters.

Norwich had been two goals ahead before Manchester City fought back to level the score before half-time.

Smith urged the crowd to become what she described as a “twelfth man”, asking repeatedly, “Where are you?” before ending with her now-famous “Let’s be having you. Come on!”

The spontaneous speech quickly became one of the most recognisable moments associated with Norwich City — although it also attracted plenty of mockery from football fans and sections of the press.

Delia Has Admitted Feeling Embarrassed

While Ted Lasso has turned the incident into a humorous television reference, Delia Smith has previously acknowledged that she felt embarrassed by what happened.

During an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs in 2024, Smith explained that she had been trying to encourage supporters to get behind Norwich as the team struggled during the match.

She recalled being handed the microphone and said she had momentarily forgotten that Sky television cameras were present.

The reaction was immediate. Smith said she received letters from football supporters across the country, although the first week following the incident was far less enjoyable.

She recalled that some people in the press even suggested she should face a disciplinary hearing from the Football Association.

Over time, however, the phrase took on a life of its own.

Smith said that when she attends away matches, supporters still call out “Let’s be having you, Delia”, something she now finds amusing and enjoys.

Smith’s Love for Football Runs Deep

Smith has also spoken warmly about what football means to her beyond the drama of individual matches.

Reflecting on her years involved with Norwich City, she described football as a game capable of producing frustration, disappointment, pain and excitement, while highlighting the sense of community surrounding it.

Delia Smith and her husband, Michael Wynn Jones, became joint majority shareholders of Norwich City in the late 1990s. Together, they helped run the club and invested their own money in supporting it through difficult and successful periods over 27 years.

Smith no longer holds the majority stake.
