Steven “Bonzo” Daniel, described as a major gangland figure in Scotland, has been arrested during an early-morning police operation at his home in Glasgow.

The 46-year-old was taken into custody at his property in Robroyston shortly before 6am on Wednesday, August 26, following a coordinated operation involving Police Scotland’s Organised Crime and Counter Terrorism Unit.

Police Move In Before Sunrise

The operation began with a 5am briefing at Baird Street Police Station before a convoy of police vehicles travelled around ten minutes to the address identified as the location for the arrest.

Two uniformed officers initially approached the property and informed Daniel that they intended to take him into custody.

Daniel then appeared at a first-floor window without a shirt. He was described as looking shocked and dazed as the clock approached 6am.

An officer accompanied by a police dog subsequently moved towards the property. Within minutes, Daniel came out through the front door and was escorted into the rear of a police van.

The dramatic arrest was carried out as part of Operation Venetic, the long-running investigation into evidence obtained following the international operation that dismantled the encrypted EncroChat mobile network.

Police also arrested another man, understood to be 39-year-old Steven Gordon, at a separate location as part of the same operation.

Both men were arrested in connection with allegations involving serious and organised crime, firearms and drugs offences.

Gordon was additionally arrested in connection with an alleged conspiracy to murder.

The arrests form part of a wider effort by Police Scotland to target organised criminal networks operating across Scotland.

Long-Running Gangland Conflict

Daniel is regarded as the head of the Daniel crime group, whose family has been involved in a long-running feud with the Lyons gang.

The rival North Glasgow factions have been at the centre of a gang conflict that began in March last year, leading to numerous arrests and convictions under Police Scotland’s ongoing Operation Portaledge.

The Lyons gang is headed by 45-year-old Steven Lyons, who is currently in custody in Spain and facing trial over alleged involvement in serious organised crime and money laundering.

The latest arrests come as police continue to pursue evidence connected to Scotland’s organised crime networks.

Police Vow to Keep Pursuing Serious Crime

Assistant Chief Constable David Ferry said the operation demonstrated Police Scotland’s determination to pursue people involved in serious and organised crime.

He said the force would continue using “every tool and tactic available” to target those involved in criminal activity and urged communities to provide information that could assist investigations.
