A murder investigation is underway after the body of a 34-year-old mother of two was found in the sea at the foot of cliffs on the Channel Island of Alderney, with a 44-year-old man arrested in connection with her death.
Hannah Benfield was discovered at the western end of the island early on Monday following an overnight search and rescue operation involving police, emergency services and volunteer rescue teams.
The man, who was initially receiving medical treatment at a hospital on Alderney, has since been taken into police custody as detectives continue their inquiries.

Overnight Search Ends in Tragedy
Guernsey Police were called shortly after 11pm on Sunday following reports of an incident near a stretch of cliffs locally known as The Guns.
Emergency crews rushed to the area, with an RNLI lifeboat joining the search. In the early hours of Monday, Channel Islands Air Search reported spotting a person in the water at the base of the cliffs at 4.28am.
A joint rescue operation was launched, but the woman was pronounced dead.
Police subsequently confirmed that a murder investigation had been opened. Hannah’s identity and photograph were released with the agreement of her family, who have been supported by specialist family liaison officers since the search concluded.

Police Appeal for Witnesses and Dashcam Footage
Investigators are appealing for information from anyone who may have been travelling through the western part of Alderney on Sunday evening.
Detectives are particularly keen to obtain dashcam footage from vehicles that travelled along Rue De Longis or other roads in the west of the island between 7.30pm and 11pm.
The footage could help officers establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and piece together the events leading up to Hannah’s death.
Police have confirmed that they are not seeking any additional suspects and do not believe there is an ongoing risk to the wider community.
The 44-year-old man remains in custody as the investigation continues.
Small Island Community Left in Shock
Alderney, one of the Channel Islands, has a resident population of just 2,167 people. News of Hannah’s death has sent shockwaves through the island’s close-knit community.
A spokesperson for Guernsey Police acknowledged the profound effect the incident was having on local residents.
“Alderney is a small, close-knit community, and the impact of an incident of this nature on a community like that cannot be overstated,” the spokesperson said.
The force also expressed its condolences to Hannah’s loved ones and asked the public to respect the family’s privacy as they begin to come to terms with their loss.
Vicar Urges Residents to Support One Another
Mother Samantha Martell, Alderney’s vicar, told the BBC that the tragedy had shaken the island and urged residents to come together rather than speculate about what had happened.
“What the community needs to do now is really come together, to look after one another,” she said.
She encouraged people not to judge or spread speculation, but instead to offer support to those affected.
“Something like this, you read about it and it’s always what happens to other people, but we are now other people,” she added.
Describing the incident as an “absolute tragedy”, Martell expressed hope that the experience would ultimately strengthen the bonds between island residents.
Local Representative Calls for Community Unity
Derwent Smithurst, a member of the States of Alderney, also spoke to the BBC about the shock felt across the island.
He said the news was difficult to comprehend in a community of Alderney’s size, where residents are accustomed to supporting one another.
“We’re a great community so we should all pull together and think of the family,” he said, acknowledging the devastating impact Hannah’s death would have on her relatives.
Police have reiterated their appeal for anyone with relevant information or footage from the specified locations and times to come forward.
As detectives continue their inquiries, Hannah’s family has asked for privacy while they grieve the loss of a mother whose death has deeply affected the entire island.
