Emergency services launch major river search

Northumbria Police confirmed that four people were believed to have been travelling in the Audi when it left the road and entered the River Wear.

Emergency services were alerted shortly before 1.30pm, triggering an extensive search operation along the river.

The scene quickly drew large crowds, with dozens of concerned onlookers gathering on both sides of the water as emergency crews worked to locate those inside the vehicle.

Police officers cordoned off an opening in the metal barrier surrounding a car park overlooking the river, while rescue teams searched the water from boats.

Coastguard teams and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) also assisted, using poles during the search. Helicopters were deployed as emergency workers continued their efforts.

Despite the response, two teenage boys and a teenage girl were confirmed dead.
