A 13-year-old schoolboy drowned after entering a lake with friends to cool off during a heatwave, despite telling them beforehand that he could not swim, an inquest has heard.

Hayden Jones-Powell’s death sent shockwaves through the community of Syston, Leicestershire, where hundreds of people later gathered to pay tribute to the teenager remembered for his cheeky personality, quick wit and infectious smile.

The youngster was among a group of 15 who visited Meynell Lake after school finished early because of the hot weather. What began as an afternoon with friends ended in tragedy when Hayden entered the water shortly before 1pm on June 25 and soon found himself in difficulty.

Desperate Search Lasted More Than Seven Hours

When Hayden began struggling in the water, his concerned friends raised the alarm. Teachers from his school rushed to the lake in an attempt to locate him, and police were called shortly after 1.30pm.

A major search operation followed, involving specialist dive teams, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and paramedics.

Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Hayden was not recovered from the water until 8.15pm, more than seven hours after he was last seen.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that the teenager had died from drowning.

During the inquest, it emerged that Hayden had told his friends he could not swim before entering the water.

Assistant coroner Isobel Thistlethwaite concluded that his death was accidental. Leicestershire Police also confirmed that there were no suspicious circumstances and that nobody else was involved in his death.

Heartbroken Parents Pay Tribute to Their Son

Hayden’s parents, Ben Jones-Powell and Emily Ambler, previously shared an emotional tribute to their son, asking people to remember him for his bright smile and the happiness he brought to those around him.

They spoke of his love for animals, his passion for football and his enjoyment of spending time outdoors. The teenager was also known for his remarkable sense of humour and quick-witted personality.

“We want him to be remembered by his big smile,” they said.

“The world isn’t the same without him.”

His parents also expressed the overwhelming difficulty of facing life without their son, saying they did not know how they would cope with the loss.

Hayden was a devoted West Bromwich Albion supporter. He leaves behind two older brothers and a sister.

Aunt Remembers a “Lovely Little Cheeky Boy”

Hayden’s aunt, Charlotte Powell, also paid tribute to the teenager, describing him as “just a really lovely little cheeky boy”.

She said the family had been devastated by the tragedy, which occurred after Hayden went to the lake hoping to cool off during the heatwave.

“It’s horrific, absolutely horrific,” Charlotte said. “It’s the thing that happens to other people, doesn’t it? It doesn’t happen to your family.”

Her words reflected the shock experienced by relatives who had never imagined they would face such a loss.

Hundreds Gather to Remember Hayden

The tragedy prompted an extraordinary outpouring of grief across Syston.

Just two days after Hayden’s death, hundreds of people gathered at Central Park to release balloons in his memory.

Many attendees wore T-shirts featuring photographs of the schoolboy, while flowers, handwritten cards and balloons were placed along a nearby fence as friends, relatives and members of the community came together to honour his life.

For Charlotte, the scale of the tributes demonstrated how many people had been touched by Hayden in his 13 years.

“Not one child doesn’t know Hayden. They all loved him,” she said.

Pointing to the tributes left by mourners, she added that they showed the remarkable impact he had made in such a short life.

Charlotte also remembered his humour and the way he could always find something witty to say.

“He was so loved, so loved, and that is evidently here today,” she said.

School Offers Support to Grieving Students and Staff

Wreake Valley Academy, where Hayden was a student, said it was devastated by his death.

A spokesperson described the incident as a tragic accident that had deeply affected the school community.

The academy confirmed that support was being provided to students, staff and families who needed help during the difficult period.

The school also asked the public to respect the privacy of everyone affected as they came to terms with the loss.

Hayden’s death has left his family, friends and school community mourning a boy whose humour, love of football and warm personality made a lasting impression on those around him.
