Kentucky State Trooper Hayden Phillips Fatally Shot During Highway Traffic Stop

A Kentucky State Police trooper was fatally shot Monday afternoon during a traffic stop on Interstate 65 in Warren County, leaving behind a wife and three children.
Trooper Hayden Phillips, 30, was shot after pulling over a vehicle on the highway, according to Kentucky State Police Commissioner Phillip Burnett Jr. The shooting happened near Smiths Grove, Kentucky, as Phillips was patrolling I-65. (AP News)
The suspect fled the scene following the shooting, prompting a search that stretched across multiple jurisdictions. Authorities later located the vehicle and suspect in Jefferson County, about 94 miles (151 kilometers) northeast of the shooting scene.
Louisville police subsequently took the suspect, a 51-year-old man from Portland, Tennessee, into custody. He is expected to be returned to Warren County to face a state murder charge. (AP News)
Trooper Killed During Traffic Stop

Officials said Phillips had stopped the vehicle as part of what U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky Kyle Bumgarner described as a “routine traffic stop.”
Authorities responded within minutes of the shooting, Bumgarner said.
The exact reason Phillips initially stopped the vehicle has not been disclosed. Officials also have not released details about how the confrontation unfolded or said whether the suspect has a prior criminal record. (AP News)
Kentucky State Police had initially issued a Blue Alert while searching for the suspect. Authorities identified him as Emonnie Branch and warned that he should be considered armed and dangerous. A bluish-gray Honda Civic with Alabama temporary tag TN018596 was also sought in connection with the shooting. (WCBL)

A Three-Year Kentucky State Police Veteran

Phillips had served with the Kentucky State Police for three years and was assigned to Post 3 in Bowling Green, in south-central Kentucky. The agency said he joined after graduating from Cadet Class 103 in 2023. (1037whht)

Gov. Andy Beshear described Phillips as a hero who dedicated himself to protecting the commonwealth. He also said Phillips was a devoted husband and loving father of three children. (Wkyu FM)
