Royal Expert Claims Prince Harry Is Trying to Bring Earl Spencer Into a Possible Diana Documentary

As the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death approaches, speculation is growing over whether Prince Harry could be preparing a documentary about his late mother — and whether his uncle, Earl Spencer, could play a central role.

The possibility comes from details in Charles Spencer’s latest memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister. In the book, Diana’s brother writes that one of his nephews has been considering a film featuring some of his late sister’s closest friends and loved ones.

Spencer does not identify which nephew he was referring to, leaving open the question of whether he meant Prince William or Prince Harry.

Harry and Earl Spencer’s reported connection

Royal expert Tom Sykes told Page Six that Harry has been “wooing” his uncle amid speculation that he and Meghan Markle could be working on a documentary about Diana.

Sykes suggested that Spencer’s involvement would give such a project greater credibility because of his close relationship with Diana and his position as a prominent member of her family.

“There is no denying [Spencer] is a big name, and he will give the documentary credibility. So [the Sussexes] need to woo him and get him onside,” Sykes said.

He further claimed that Harry and Meghan could be preparing a Diana-focused film in the UK, with Spencer potentially being considered for a prominent role in the project.

However, these claims remain speculation, and there has been no confirmation in the article that the Sussexes are producing such a documentary.

Spencer’s memoir adds another layer

Sykes also pointed to the timing of Harry’s reported alignment with Spencer as significant, particularly because Swan Song: Diana, My Sister contains controversial allegations concerning King Charles and his treatment of Diana.

The royal expert cited what he described as subtle signs of support from Harry and Meghan for Spencer following the book’s publicity campaign.

Among them, Sykes referenced Meghan’s use of a swan emoji around the time the memoir was receiving media attention.

He also highlighted Spencer’s claim that Harry was “completely fine” with the publication of the book.

“He would not have made that comment unless he had been given the nod to say, in effect, that Harry and Meghan are behind it,” Sykes said.

A question of Diana’s legacy

Sykes went further by suggesting that financial considerations could be part of Harry’s interest in working with his uncle.

“Money, rather than any deep emotional bond, is, I suspect, why Harry appears so close to the Spencer side of the family right now,” he claimed.

According to the expert, a potential documentary could also allow Harry to present himself as “the true inheritor of Diana’s legacy,” particularly by emphasizing his mother’s public image and her willingness to challenge established royal traditions.

Sykes believes the project could focus heavily on revelations involving the royal family, while drawing comparisons between Harry’s criticism of the monarchy and the way Diana was treated following her separation from Charles.

He also noted that Harry’s continued criticism of the institution has been viewed critically by some people in the UK, particularly given the privileges associated with his position.

William’s plans remain unclear

While speculation continues around Harry and Earl Spencer, Prince William’s own plans for the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death have not been publicly confirmed.

Kensington Palace has declined to comment on how the Prince of Wales intends to mark the anniversary.

“We wouldn’t comment on how the Prince of Wales will mark the anniversary. William has been approached with many offers and is thinking hard about what he wants to do,” the palace said.

For now, Spencer’s memoir has provided fresh material for speculation about how Diana’s sons may commemorate the milestone.

But with Spencer leaving the identity of the nephew unnamed and no documentary confirmed in the report, it remains unclear whether Harry is in fact preparing such a project — or whether William was the nephew his uncle had in mind.
