Royal Expert Says William and Kate’s Marriage Was Built on Friendship First

Prince William and Princess Kate’s enduring relationship may have been shaped by something that existed long before they became a couple: a strong friendship.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have spent around 15 years navigating royal life together, from major public appearances and unexpected challenges to raising their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Throughout that time, their relationship has remained a subject of fascination for royal watchers, many of whom have wondered what has helped the couple maintain such a close partnership under intense public scrutiny.

According to royal author and biographer Ingrid Seward, the answer may be found in the years before William and Kate became romantically involved.

Their relationship began with friendship

Speaking on HELLO!’s A Right Royal Podcast while discussing her latest book, Catherine & Diana, Seward highlighted the friendship that developed between William and Kate before they became lovers.

“I think the great thing was that she and William were very good friends before they became lovers!” Seward said.

The couple met while studying art history at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where their relationship developed over time.

Seward recalled how Kate became someone William could turn to for advice, describing her as a kind of sounding board during their university years.

She remembered an early occasion when William drove to Bucklebury to visit Kate during a university vacation. The pair went to a local pub and spent a long time talking.

According to Seward, Kate listened to William and offered her own advice when he was unhappy studying art history.

“She listened to him, and she advised him,” Seward recalled, explaining that Kate encouraged him to consider another subject, suggesting geography among his options.

William ultimately switched from art history to geography.

A relationship that developed gradually

Seward also pointed out that Kate had her own life and dating experiences before her relationship with William became romantic. She had previously dated another boyfriend whom the author described as “handsome.”

That history, combined with the friendship she had already established with William, meant their relationship did not begin solely as a romance.

Instead, according to Seward, the couple’s partnership developed from a close friendship that had already given them an opportunity to understand and support one another.

Over the years, that support has continued in both directions.

Kate has supported William through the demands of royal life, just as he has supported her, creating what Seward sees as a foundation of mutual trust.

Friendship at the heart of their partnership

William and Kate married on April 29, 2011, at Westminster Abbey and have since taken on increasingly prominent roles within the royal family.

Their lives have included major public duties as well as the responsibilities of raising their three children.

For Seward, however, the foundation of their relationship can be traced back to a much simpler connection.

Rather than beginning with romance, William and Kate first developed a friendship in which they could talk openly, listen to each other and offer advice.

After 15 years in the public spotlight, that early friendship remains, in Seward’s view, an important part of the bond they built together.
