Corie Walsh Was Planning a Disney World Trip for Her 2-Year-Old Hours Before His Death, Defense Says

Just hours before 2-year-old Barrett Walsh was found dead inside his family’s Illinois home, his mother was reportedly talking excitedly about something entirely different: taking him to Disney World and watching his reaction when he met some of his favorite characters.

That detail emerged as attorneys for Corie Walsh, 40, argued that the mother of four had been planning for her family’s future shortly before the Sept. 1 incident that led to her arrest.

Walsh has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder and remains jailed. Her defense maintains that she was experiencing a psychotic episode at the time.

A Family Vacation Had Been Months in the Making

Defense attorney Robert Kerr told a Will County courtroom that Walsh and her mother had begun organizing a Disney World vacation in January.

The planned trip was expected to include Walsh, her husband Michael, their four children and both grandmothers.

According to Kerr, significant preparations had already been made. Flights and hotel rooms had been reserved, along with dinner reservations and park passes.

But Barrett was apparently the child Walsh was particularly excited to take.

The 2-year-old had delayed speech, Kerr said, and among his first words were “Bluey” and “Mickey Mouse.”

Only hours before the incident, the defense says Walsh told her mother how eager she was to see Barrett’s reaction to meeting the characters he loved.

That conversation has now become a central part of the defense’s attempt to describe Walsh’s state of mind before her son’s death.

Prosecutors Point to a Very Different Picture

Prosecutors allege Walsh intentionally caused Barrett’s death inside the family’s home in Frankfort, roughly 35 miles south of Chicago.

They have also alleged that she had recently become deeply invested in the high-profile Lindsay Clancy murder trial.

Authorities say the events unfolded on the afternoon of Sept. 1, when two of Barrett’s older siblings returned home and discovered the toddler in the basement.

The children sought help from a neighbor, who called 911 and attempted CPR.

Barrett was pronounced dead at the scene.

Court records cited in the case state that an autopsy determined his cause of death was asphyxia caused by ligature compression of the neck.

Walsh was also found injured inside the home, according to authorities, while her 8-month-old son was discovered unsupervised on the main floor.

Court documents further allege that Walsh made disturbing statements to investigators following the incident.

Defense Says the Allegations Don’t Match the Woman Her Family Knew

Walsh’s attorneys are presenting a sharply different account of her life before Sept. 1.

Kerr described her as a highly involved and loving mother and said other parents had trusted Walsh to care for their own children.

Friends, relatives and neighbors have reportedly struggled to reconcile that image with the allegations now before the court.

Her husband and other relatives have continued appearing in court to support her.

During a recent preliminary hearing, Michael Walsh became emotional while watching his wife from the gallery.

Walsh entered her not-guilty plea during the brief proceeding.

Her attorneys, Kerr and Andrea Lyon, have continued seeking to have her moved from jail to a hospital where she could receive psychiatric treatment. A judge previously rejected a request for her release.

Lyon said the defense had subpoenaed Walsh’s jail records to determine whether she was receiving appropriate treatment.

The attorney has maintained that Walsh had never previously been violent and argued that her behavior on Sept. 1 resulted from psychosis.

Her Family Continues to Stand Beside Her

Despite the severity of the charges, Walsh’s relatives have continued publicly supporting her.

Her husband was seen receiving comfort from loved ones outside court and said he had been packing up the family home.

Boxes could reportedly be seen stacked inside the residence.

Lyon said Walsh’s entire family remains behind her and wants her to receive treatment.

The defense is expected to continue emphasizing Walsh’s mental state as the criminal proceedings move forward, while prosecutors maintain that she knowingly and intentionally caused Barrett’s death.

The Disney World plans now add another deeply emotional detail to that dispute.

According to the defense, Walsh was not simply discussing some distant possibility. Reservations had already been made, and only hours before the incident she was talking to her mother about how excited she was for Barrett to experience the trip.

Barrett Remembered as a Joyful 2-Year-Old

Barrett, affectionately known as “Bear,” was remembered by his family as an energetic child who loved music, dancing and playing with his siblings.

His obituary described him as a joyful and entertaining 2-year-old who enjoyed children’s songs, learning his colors and kicking a soccer ball with friends.

He was also remembered as a cherished younger brother to Grady and Anna and an older brother to baby Cormick.

Outside the Walsh family home, stuffed animals, flowers and handwritten messages were placed in Barrett’s memory. Nearby trees were wrapped with blue ribbons.

Walsh remains in custody as the case continues.

And amid the competing accounts now being presented in court, the timing of that final conversation about Disney World has become one of the most striking details raised by her defense: only hours before Barrett’s death, his mother was reportedly telling his grandmother how much she wanted to see his face when he finally met Bluey and Mickey Mouse.
