Prince Harry has reportedly returned to the UK without the reconciliation some royal watchers had hoped for, with people close to the Duke of Sussex claiming he remains angry with members of the Royal Family and still expects an apology.
The claims come after Harry and Meghan Markle returned to Britain last week, prompting fresh speculation that their arrival could signal a new chapter in the long-running royal rift.
A private jet believed to belong to the couple was spotted at Birmingham Airport, fueling suggestions that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could be ready for a “reset” with the family they left behind in 2020.
But according to people who have spoken to Harry since his return, the reality may be considerably more complicated.
‘No imminent mea culpa’
Friends reportedly expected Harry to return with a more conciliatory attitude after years of tension between the Sussexes and other senior royals, particularly the Prince and Princess of Wales.
Instead, one source claimed the Duke remains frustrated and believes he is still owed an apology.
Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, the source said people who recently caught up with Harry had anticipated “noises of contrition and humility.”
They were reportedly surprised to find that he remains angry with members of the Royal Family and continues to blame what he has described as the “men in grey suits” surrounding his father, King Charles.
The source added that Harry appeared to remain in what they described as an “Oprah mindset,” referring to the highly publicised interview he and Meghan gave to Oprah Winfrey after stepping back from royal duties.
Harry previously criticised the influence of the so-called “men in grey suits” in 2025, amid reports that he believed unidentified Palace officials had undermined attempts to improve his relationship with his father.
At the time, the dispute was linked to reports of hostile briefings to newspapers following the Sussexes’ departure for the United States. A source close to the King had maintained that the relationship between Charles and Harry was ultimately “a matter for them only.”
A separate battle over Harry’s security
Harry’s reported frustration extends beyond his relationship with the Royal Family.
The Duke is also said to be challenging decisions surrounding the security arrangements provided to him and his family in the UK.
His legal representatives have reportedly written to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, asking her to personally intervene in the decision-making process concerning protection for Harry, Meghan and their children.
The dispute centres on the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC), the body responsible for assessing security arrangements for royals and other prominent British figures.
According to reports in The Sunday Times, Harry’s lawyers have accused RAVEC’s former chair of failing to inform him about intelligence concerning an alleged al-Qaeda threat while he was living in the United States.
The claim concerns intelligence that was reportedly passed through the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network, which includes Britain.
Harry’s legal team reportedly says the FBI received information suggesting that senior al-Qaeda figures had circulated material on a private Telegram channel referring to the Duke’s assassination.
However, Harry’s security team is said to have learned about the intelligence from American officials rather than directly through the British system.
Harry reportedly questions whether RAVEC can assess his case fairly
People close to Harry have reportedly raised concerns about whether RAVEC can make an impartial assessment of the security risks facing him and his family.
One source cited by The Times argued that the issue was not about Harry’s current role within the Royal Family, but about the potential risks facing him, Meghan and their children.
The source also questioned the level of protection available to Harry’s private security team, claiming they have limited options to defend the family if an attack were to occur.
The argument, according to the source, is that Harry remains the son of the King regardless of his position within the institution.
Government review underway
The Home Office has ordered a further review of the security risks facing Harry, Meghan and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, following the family’s return to the UK.
The development places the Sussexes’ security concerns alongside an already complicated family relationship.
For now, there is no indication that Harry’s return has produced the reconciliation some observers had hoped for. Instead, reports suggest that he remains deeply frustrated with both Palace officials and the government’s approach to his security.
