Third Arrest Made in Leicester Murder Investigation After Cyclist George Glover Dies Following Attack

A 27-year-old man has died days after being punched while cycling through Leicester, prompting a murder investigation and a third arrest.

George Glover was attacked at around 6.30am on Monday, August 17, as he rode along Narborough Road near the junction with Noel Street. He suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, where he died on Thursday, August 20.

Police said their investigation established that Mr Glover had been punched as he cycled along the road. Detectives have described the incident as a violent and apparently unprovoked attack.

Three people arrested as investigation continues

The death has led to the arrest of three people.

A 31-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman were initially arrested on suspicion of robbery and conspiracy to commit murder. A 24-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder and remained in custody at the time of the third-arrest announcement.

The arrests followed a police appeal for information about a man believed to have been in the area around the time Mr Glover was attacked.

Detectives from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU) are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death and have urged anyone with information or relevant footage to come forward.

George Glover remembered as a loving and loyal brother

For Mr Glover’s family, the investigation comes amid the loss of a young man they described as deeply loved and respected.

In a statement released through police, his family said George was a much-loved son and the eldest brother of three siblings. They said his death had already left an enormous void.

They described him as a hardworking and focused young man who had worked hard to find a job he enjoyed. His life was described as simple and private: he would go to work, return home and spend his free time gaming or putting bike parts together.

His siblings looked up to him, the family said, and his sense of humour often brought laughter into the home.

George was also remembered for his interests in Anime, Lego and Pokémon cards.

The family said he had faced physical challenges early in life but that they were immensely proud of the person he had become.

They described him as “loving and loyal” and said his loss would be felt by many people who held him in high regard.

Attack happened on a busy Leicester road

Detective Inspector Kevin Hames, from EMSOU, said Narborough Road is a busy route into and out of Leicester and appealed directly to anyone who may have witnessed something that morning.

He described the incident as a violent and unprovoked attack that had tragically resulted in the death of a young man.

Police believe there may still be members of the public who have information that could help investigators establish exactly what happened.

Detectives have particularly asked for anyone who may have captured relevant footage to contact them, stressing that even information that might appear insignificant could assist the investigation.

Two men later charged with murder

The investigation progressed further after the arrests.

On August 22, Leicestershire Police announced that two men had been charged with murder following Mr Glover’s death. Chae Smith, 31, was charged with murder, robbery and possession of a bladed article, while Joshua Cook, 24, was charged with murder and robbery.

A third person, Louise O’Connor, 39, was charged with robbery.

The three were due to appear at Leicester Magistrates’ Court.

The developments came just days after George was found injured on Narborough Road and taken to hospital. Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the attack and have maintained their appeal for information.

For George’s family, the focus remains on remembering a young man they say was hardworking, loyal and loved, while detectives work to establish what happened during his final journey through Leicester.
