Finlay Tarling, 19, Dies After Serious Accident During Volta a Portugal

The cycling world was left stunned when a live television commentator struggled to hold back tears while announcing the death of 19-year-old British cyclist Finlay Tarling.
The young rider died today following a “serious accident” during the eighth leg of the Volta a Portugal. Local reports have suggested that he was struck by a car as the race passed through Ponte de Lima in northern Portugal.
According to Correio da Manha, the vehicle was reportedly travelling in the wrong direction and attempted a U-turn after the driver mistakenly believed the peloton had already passed.
“Absolutely horrific news”

TNT commentator Jez Cox had the difficult task of breaking the news live on air.
Before reading the official statement, Cox warned viewers: “It’s not just bad news, it is absolutely horrific news.”
His voice then faltered as he read the announcement from race organisers, visibly struggling to contain his emotions.
“Nothing in my life has prepared me for what to say next,” Cox said.
“All I can say is that we extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
“It’s the type of announcement I never wanted to make on air about any rider at all and I am so very very sorry.”
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but Finlay could not be saved and died from his injuries earlier today.
The Volta a Portugal organisation and the Portuguese Cycling Federation confirmed his death in a statement describing the incident as a “serious accident”, although they did not provide further details.
The race has since been suspended as a mark of respect, while the planned podium ceremony in Fafe was cancelled.
In a joint statement, organisers said: “At this moment of profound shock and sadness, the Volta a Portugal organisation and the Portuguese Cycling Federation extend their deepest condolences to Finlay Tarling’s family, his teammates, NSN Development Team and all of his friends and loved ones.”

Tributes pour in for promising young rider
Finlay was the younger brother of professional cyclist Josh Tarling.
His team, NSN, said it was “heartbroken” by his death and that he would be “deeply missed”.
“Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many,” the team wrote on Instagram.
“Our deepest condolences go out to Fin’s parents Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh, and everyone who was lucky enough to call Fin a friend.”
Finlay, who was from Ceredigion, Wales, had already built an impressive record despite his young age.

In 2023, he won silver medals in the team pursuit at the Junior European Track Championships and the Junior Chrono des Nation.
He later signed a two-year contract to race for Israel’s Premier Tech Academy, beginning in 2025.
The academy paid tribute to him on Instagram, writing: “Our thoughts are with Finlay Tarling’s family, teammates and loved ones following the tragic passing of such a young and talented rider.”
Academy Manager Tim Elverson had previously highlighted Finlay’s talent, saying: “Time trialling is his passion; it’s also an area in which the team is really keen to improve.”
Just weeks before his death, Finlay had won a bronze medal in the Lloyds National Road Championships U23 Men’s Time Trial.
Fans remember Finlay as a champion
Heartfelt tributes also appeared beneath his final Instagram post, where fans had been celebrating his recent medal.
One person wrote: “You will be always a champion.”
Another cycling parent shared an emotional tribute on Facebook, writing: “As a fellow cycling parent … the loss of Finlay has hit hard.”
“My condolences to his family whom I know were so very dedicated to both boy’s cycling careers. A life cut short far too soon.”
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also expressed his shock, describing Finlay’s death as “a piece of news that leaves us deeply shaken”.
For Finlay’s family, teammates and the wider cycling community, the sudden loss has brought an abrupt end to the career of a rider who had already shown considerable promise at just 19 years old.
