A harrowing war drama which aired on the BBC in the 1980s has been branded a “masterpiece”.

Threads is a chilling apocalyptic BBC war drama that delves into the bleak aftermath of a nuclear strike on Britain. First aired in 1984, Its stark depiction of the medical, economic, and environmental devastation resonated with viewers, who branded it a “masterpiece”.  Crafted by Barry Hines and directed by Mick Jackson, this wartime saga exposes the anguish of families in Sheffield struggling to survive after a Soviet nuclear attack. The catastrophic consequences portrayed reveal a UK in ruins, with millions dead or injured in the disaster’s aftermath.

It was noted for its decision to emphasise everyday people trapped in the turmoil rather than celebrating warriors. Threads explores the consequences of conflict, depicting civilians’ battle to rebuild their ordinary existence among the wreckage after confronting mortality. The haunting influence of Threads remains powerful today, establishing its standing as a “unique” treasure in British film heritage. It also inspired future creators, including Charlie Brooker, who created Black Mirror.

Charlie Brooker recalled his formative experience with Threads at just 13 years old during a 2018 “Desert Island Discs” appearance. He remarked: “I remember watching Threads and not being able to process what that meant, not understanding how society kept going… While the world has changed in so many ways since Threads was first broadcast, it retains its harrowing power.”

The film has had rave reviews from viewers, as one said: “It’s hard watching, but it does what it means to do – underlines that there are no winners in nuclear war. Fantastic film which still holds its own, if extremely depressing. Bring a tissue or two.”

One viewers branded it a “a feel-bad masterpiece,” adding: “This is easily the best TV movie I’ve ever seen, and honestly, it might just be one of the best movies full stop I’ve ever seen.”

 

Another said: “Watching it in 2024 – a Must Watch now! I gave it 10 points for the shock it gave me. Horribly current topic at the moment with nuclear threats around, a true anti-war movie. I’d suggest watching it for some politicians before showing- off with artillery, weapons – and I can only pray they’ll always think before pushing the red button.”

 

 

A third branded it “my fourth favourite film of all time.”

Following an initial ban, “Threads” received widespread praise, earning seven BAFTA Award nominations and winning four, including Best Single Drama and Best Design.

Over four decades on from its initial release, film enthusiasts are urging people to watch Threads, which is currently accessible on BBC iPlayer.
