Netflix viewers 'switch off' as they 'hate' true crime doc's distracting detail
Netflix fans failed to finish watching a new true crime documentary due to one production choice.

True crime show Worst Neighbor Ever has just launched on Netflix and the four-part documentary series explores how nightmare neighbours destroyed the lives of local residents. From fatal shootings to fraudulent acts, the dark and sinister encounters are told through personal accounts of those closest to the stories.
However, the streaming giant also used another form of storytelling which left viewers reeling, with some even switching off, unable to finish the show. The ‘Worst Ever…’ franchise in particular is known for using cartoons for reenactments, instead of the usual live actors. Viewers took to Reddit to discuss the production choice, with many saying they “hate” it.

One viewer added: “I turned it off as soon as the animation started. I am very much not into it.”
Another agreed: “Hate them. It really bugs me. Also, it’s because it’s cheaper to animate than to create real reenactments. Makes me really appreciate a bygone era.”
A third fumed: “I hate it. It makes serious stories not seem that serious. It has actually made me turn off some shows because I wanted to watch a true crime series from a mature perspective. Not a f****** cartoon for high schoolers.”
Another shared: “I couldn’t even finish one episode of that series because of this. Odd choice on their part.”
While one called it “cheap AI slop”, another commented: “Yeah, it takes me out of the story. Also, the cartoons telling the story of really horrible things make it feel less serious.

“If someone made a cartoon out of my loved one being hurt or killed, I would be very upset.”
However, plenty of fans said they enjoyed the artistic choice, feeling it was a unique approach and “way better than having bad actors do the dramatisation”.
One shared: “I like the visual for when they don’t have other visuals to recap parts of the story. Otherwise it would be just more of the footage of the people who are being interviewed, I guess.
“I don’t really care that they are animations. They are done respectfully in my opinion.”
Another added: “I don’t mind the cartoons, it’s not like they are goofy or unserious, they are reenactments and sometimes I prefer it rather than the real actors.”
