Britain’s Got Talent star Maarty Broekman has revealed to Digital Spy that he almost quit the show after More Talent host Stephen Mulhern poked fun at his self-penned song ‘Backdoor Lover’.
The Dutch keytar player claimed that the Catchphrase presenter was “not nice” about his song and knocked his confidence by pointing out the explicit connotations of its title.
“I don’t know if it’s okay people joke about that,” he said. “Stephen Mulhern, when I had an interview with him on the day – I never tell anybody this – but on the day I was thinking, ‘I’m not doing audition now’, because he was joking over it. And I thought, ‘This not nice’. I thought I made big mistake, and then I almost walk away.
“And then I thought, ‘You know, I just do it’, I must take risk. This is why I come to British. And then everybody like it, and it’s okay. Everything I write now I have it check by… my friend who’s English.”
Opening up about the mockery he received online after his Britain’s Got Talent appearance, Broekman continued: “Other people have a joke, like, ‘Ha Ha, Marty, it means something else. It means sexytime’.
“If people want to laugh about it, it’s okay. But some people are really harsh… there is no room for people who are nasty on my Twitter and my Facebook, because it doesn’t work.”
The singer added that he is “still working” on wooing BGT judge Alesha Dixon, and believes a romance “is written in the stars”.
He also stressed that there is “nothing wrong” with Dixon’s fellow panellist Amanda Holden, but “you cannot go after a lady who has already babies”.
On the possibility of winning BGT and playing at the Royal Variety Performance, Broekman declared: “When I win, I be friends with the Queen! She can come over.
“I make good tea. I make pancakes. That’d be nice, the Queen over my house. Can you imagine this? Tell her on [Digital Spy], she can come… Can she determine also who goes through [on Britain’s Got Talent]?”
