Netflix fans are absolutely captivated by this “beautiful” period drama based on a remarkable true story.

Audiences simply cannot resist period dramas, from Wuthering Heights on the cinema screen to The Other Bennet Sister on BBC One, or the beloved Downton Abbey across both television and film.

It’s therefore unsurprising that Netflix viewers have been enthralled by this 1930s historical drama, which is not only rooted in actual events but showcases several Hollywood heavyweights.

At the forefront is Carey Mulligan portraying heiress Edith Pretty, whose character employs self-taught archaeologist Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes), who discovers the Sutton Hoo—a 1,400 year old Anglo-Saxon vessel buried in Suffolk.

The Sutton Hoo has been referred to as “Britain’s Tutankhamun” and represented a pivotal moment in the nation’s heritage.
