Wisconsin Father of Four Dies After Collapsing Just Feet From Finish Line of His First Half Marathon
Wisconsin father of four John Meise, 36, died after collapsing near the finish line of the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon, his first half marathon.
A Wisconsin family is mourning the sudden death of a 36-year-old father of four who collapsed less than 600 feet from the finish line while attempting his first half marathon.
John Meise was taking part in the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon on Sunday morning when he collapsed shortly before 10 a.m. near the 13-mile mark.
Emergency medical personnel immediately began lifesaving efforts before Meise was taken from the course on a stretcher and transported to Froedtert Hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
Cause of Death Remains Undetermined
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office said Meise had no known medical history. His cause of death has not yet been determined.
Sunday’s race marked a significant personal milestone for Meise. His wife, Lauren, said he had been running for around six years, but this was the first half marathon he had attempted.
He was agonizingly close to completing it when he collapsed.
Meise leaves behind Lauren and their four young children: Mason, 11, Owen, 8, Lucy, 4, and one-year-old Isla.

Following his death, relatives and friends described Meise as someone deeply devoted to his family and capable of making those around him feel valued and welcome.
His sister-in-law, Kristin Bennett, organized a GoFundMe to support Lauren and the children, writing that his death had left an enormous void for everyone who knew him.
Family friend Stacy Horneck also remembered Meise as an exceptionally devoted husband and father who loved spending time with his family.
Beyond running, Meise had studied journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, earning a bachelor’s degree before building a career in marketing. He worked as a brand and digital marketing manager for QuadMed.

Organizers of the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon expressed their condolences to Meise’s family and loved ones while thanking the medical teams, first responders, volunteers and public safety personnel who assisted during the event.
They said established medical and emergency-response procedures were in place along the course and emphasized that participant safety remains a central priority.
According to organizers, Meise’s death was the first fatality in the event’s 44-year history.
The tragedy occurred during a record-breaking weekend for the race, with approximately 8,000 people registered across the events and around 6,000 participants running on Sunday.
For Meise’s family, however, the day will be remembered not for the record turnout but for a devastating loss that came just moments before he was due to complete a milestone he had never reached before.
