Seward noted that because Harry is a hereditary prince of the blood, stripping the Sussex peerage would simply result in Meghan adopting the title of “Princess Henry”—styled formally after her husband’s birth name, Prince Henry Charles Albert David. Seward argued that transforming Meghan from a Duchess into a Princess would only amplify international media fascination and baffle American audiences, asserting that the royal family’s current posture of leaving the titles untouched remains the most pragmatic policy.
This naming mechanism reflects centuries-old British heraldic precedent. Only princesses born into the royal bloodline, such as Princess Charlotte or the Princess Royal, are formally entitled to use “Princess” directly preceding their given names. Women who acquire princely rank strictly through marriage automatically assume their husband’s Christian name. A notable precedent is Catherine, Princess of Wales, who was legally styled as HRH Princess William alongside Duchess of Cambridge upon her royal wedding in 2011 until her husband’s investiture as Prince of Wales in September 2022. Consequently, an administrative revocation of the Sussex dukedom would inadvertently elevate Meghan’s styling to princely nomenclature rather than reducing her to a commoner.
