‘The Other Bennet Sister’: Hayward Tries to Make a Big Confession to Mary (VIDEO)

The heart wants what it wants, and Mary Bennet (Ella Bruccoleri) and Tom Hayward (Dónal Finn) seem to want each other in BritBox’s The Other Bennet Sister, but William Ryder (Laurie Davidson) interrupts a big moment in the TV Insider exclusive clip from Episode 9, above.
The Other Bennet Sister puts Mary Bennet from Jane Austen‘s Pride and Prejudice front and center on a journey of self-discovery, self-love, and romantic love. The more time that she spends with her aunt (Indira Varma) and uncle (Richard Coyle) in London, the more she realizes what life really has to offer. She’s more confident than ever that she doesn’t deserve the cold treatment from her mother, Mrs. Bennet (Ruth Jones), and a trip to the lakes has given her the opportunity to connect with Mr. Hayward again after some time apart.
Previously, Mary thought she might get engaged to Mr. Ryder, but his proposal was an offer to live outside of social norms together in Italy. It was an offer she had to refuse. Ryder, in an attempt to reconnect with Mary, showed up on their lake trip with the Gardiners and thwarted a peaceful moment together on a boat, leading to a hilarious scene where Hayward and Ryder both fell into the lake, lost the oars, and had to drag the boat safely back to shore before Mary could fall in, too. The trip continues in Episode 9, coming out June 17, on BritBox, and it will show this trio on a hike up a famous mountain.

“Miss Bennet, Mary,” Hayward says, the use of her first name making them both blush. “I am most glad that we were able to see this, to be here together.”
“As am I,” Mary says, beaming with anticipation.
“You know that I’ve grown so fond of you, so fond of you during our time together,” says Hayward, as Mary replies, “And I you.” Things get more sentimental.

“There is no one I long to talk to like I do you, no one,” he says. “No one who makes me feel more like me, if that makes any sense at all.”
“Absolutely, it does,” Mary replies, laughing with joy.
Hayward asks, “I wondered if you might…,” but Ryder interrupts before he can get out another word. Hayward is beside himself, and Mary urges him to ask his question anyway. He promises to continue later, but the romantic moment is over.
