Randy Travis is giving a lifelong fan something she’ll never forget.

The country star, 67, recently visited City of Hope Cancer Center in Chicago to surprise Bunnia Greenwood, a devoted fan who has been living with cancer for years and is hospitalized.

Greenwood, a NICU nurse of more than 30 years, has dealt with multiple cancer diagnoses. Throughout her years of treatment, her mantra has been “choose joy,” the hospital tells PEOPLE. As a way to bring her joy “when she needed it most,” her family and friends helped her fulfill one of her biggest dreams of meeting Travis.

In a clip posted to Instagram by the hospital on Friday, July 31, Greenwood is in her hospital bed when she’s informed by loved ones that after a few calls were made, they were able to land her an autographed poster of Travis.

While Greenwood is left in awe of the gift, Travis is rolled into the room in a wheelchair by his wife, Mary. Mary then introduces her husband to Greenwood as she’s immediately overcome with emotion.

“Thank you so much,” she tells the musician while wiping away her tears. “I have been a fan of yours for years.”

“On hard days and good days alike, the music of country legend @therandytravis has kept her spirit lifted and her heart full,” the hospital wrote of Greenwood. “Their time together was filled with warmth, connection and the kind of joy that words cannot fully capture.”

City of Hope also thanked Travis for making the moment happen and being a part of their community.

The sweet gesture comes as the star has been navigating his own health challenges over the years.

In July 2013, the “Forever and Ever, Amen” singer suffered a near-fatal stroke after being hospitalized for presumptive cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. Mary later told PEOPLE in 2019 that the entire “speaking, writing and reading” section of his left brain was affected as a result, a condition that’s known as aphasia.

Following the stroke, Travis’ condition kept him from performing as he had to relearn basic skills, according to Mary. Slowly but surely, his prognosis improved, and he has since been able to release music, such as his 2024 single, “Where That Came From,” marking his first new track since his stroke.

In 2025, Travis hit the road with his original touring band and Louisiana country singer James Dupré, who performs many of Travis’ most iconic hits. The “More Life” tour with Dupré has since been extended into 2026, with the string of shows marking Travis’ first major tour in recent years.

In April, Travis posted a video on Instagram of himself in a wheelchair being pushed onto the stage to a standing ovation.

“It’s the fans who make these appearances and shows so special, and the reason I keep doing it,” the country star wrote.
