  • Princess Anne has long been known as the monarchy’s hardest working royal, but she’s also an “amazing mother and grandmother.”
  • The Princess Royal accepted her new stepgranddaughter Georgina Sperling into the fold “with open arms” after Anne’s son Peter Phillips married Georgina’s mother Harriet Sperling earlier this summer.
  • “Like all grandchildren, I think they can get away with things,” royal biographer Robert Hardman said, adding of Anne, “She dotes on them.”

Princess Anne has long been known as the hardest working member of the royal family, but she’s also a devoted mother to her two children, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, and her six grandchildren—including one that just joined the family earlier this summer.

On June 6, Phillips married Harriet Sperling in a royal wedding attended by many members of the family, including King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Kate Middleton. Sperling is the mother of 13-year-old Georgina Sperling, who joins Phillips’s two daughters Savannah, 15, and Isla, 14. (The Princess Royal is also a grandmother to Tindall’s three children Mia, Lena, and Lucas.)

Georgina has blended in seamlessly with the royal family, making her first official appearance on Easter Sunday in April when she and her mother attended church with the royal family at St. George’s Chapel two months ahead of the wedding. Especially accepting of Georgina is Anne, who Hello! reported has welcomed her teenage stepgranddaughter “with open arms.”

Anne is a “hands-on and doting” grandmother, who one source described as both an “amazing mother and grandmother” with a natural ability to make people feel at ease—just like her late mother, Queen Elizabeth. Anne’s children live near their mother at her 700-acre estate, Gatcombe Park, in Gloucestershire, and the Princess Royal sees her grandchildren regularly, despite her jam-packed schedule, according to The Daily Mail.

Queen Elizabeth’s former press secretary Ailsa Anderson said Anne is “a pragmatist, a divorcee herself—and I think, like every parent, she just wants to see her children happy.”

“She adores them, and it’s touching to see her with her grandchildren at horse trials, showing them things and looking relaxed in her jeans,” Anderson said.

Royal biographer Robert Hardman described Anne’s relationship with her grandchildren as “very no-nonsense,” adding, “It’s very normal. There isn’t any standing on ceremony, and she’s the only one with a title. She’s a very good grandmother. She’s hands-on, but like all grandchildren, I think they can get away with things. She dotes on them.”

Anne just celebrated her 76th birthday on August 15, and hopefully took some downtime with her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence. “She does not pause for breath,” Anderson said of the Princess Royal’s unbelievable work ethic.

“Think about how many other 76-year-olds are putting their feet up, watching TV, and she just carries on,” she added. “It’s all about duty. She inherited that sense of duty and service from both of her parents. I don’t think the word ‘retirement’ is in her vocabulary.”

“Anne has a very masculine energy but definitely has a soft side, like Prince Philip did, and she is very proud of Peter and Zara,” royal biographer Ingrid Seward told Hello!. “She’s always refused to be photographed kissing babies in public, but she’s different with her own grandchildren, and she obviously adores them.”

Speaking on a 2020 documentary about their mother’s 70th birthday called Anne: The Princess Royal at 70, the siblings gave rare insight into Anne as a grandmother. “She loves seeing them ride, she loves having them ‘round for Sunday lunches and taking them for walks, doing all the things that we would do as kids,” Peter said (per Hello!). “We quite like leaving them on Sundays. We’ll say, ‘We’ll pick them up later—bye!’”

In addition to forming a close bond with Anne, Georgina is also close to her new stepsisters Savannah and Isla—after all, the teenagers play on the same hockey team, which is how Peter and Harriet connected. Harriet and Georgina’s quick acceptance into the royal family is proof that the monarchy is evolving, royal historian Dr. Tessa Dunlop told The Sun.

“Here is a woman who, as a divorcee and single parent, speaks to modern, blended Britain, and likewise as a middle-aged nurse puts the public-sector worker into the royals’ famed life of service,” Dunlop said of Harriet. “Harriet is the real deal—with her quiet Christian faith and NHS work ethic, she provides the blueprint for a modern, unshowy monarchy.”

The “warm friendship” between Savannah, Isla, and Georgina is “further evidence of a new contemporary model for Britain’s most famous family,” Dunlop added.
