There are TV show love stories and then there are love stories from TV shows. You know the sort, the kind that makes any viewer swoon and find that inexplicably different romance that makes the story that much more endearing. If the limited scope of social media I see is anything go by, the love story currently doing this and more is the one between Mary Bennet and Tom Hayward from The Other Bennet Sister. An adaptation, the period drama is a recent release (for the US) on BritBox, and is certainly something critics and viewers seem to agree on which is that the hype for this is real.

If you haven’t seen the show, it follows the sisters from Jane Austen’s immensely popular Pride and Prejudice or more specifically the sister no one ever remembers: Mary. The show picks up in earnest after all four of her sisters are married and in homes of their own leaving Mary to bare the weight of her mother’s often pointed remarks and her spells with phantom illnesses. Life soon changes and Mary finds joy in the home of her aunt where she finds herself experiencing the possibility of real love.

As everyone is loving on this British drama, let’s put a spotlight on its central character and the joy she finds in her own love story.

THE MEET CUTE

The Episode: Three

Though this takes place in the 1800s, this series proves that meet-cutes still happen no matter the era. In this, Tom appears at the doorway where Mary is tutoring her students. This moment begins their shared commonalities, one of which is books…

THE EXCHANGE of BOOKS

This is a thing that kind of runs throughout their love story. The pair exchanges books that inspires them to come to know each other deeper as they discover genres and authors they normally don’t read. Mary counts philosophy and deep thoughts the only way to go while Tom loves poetry. Reading these books helps them both see each other through new eyes and it’s actually a way to build their deeper connection.

FLIRTING

These two flirt a bit throughout the series, but of course, it’s all very 1800s! However, the scene where Tom arrives at her aunt and uncle’s home in Gracechurch, is one of the cutest. He finds Mary, quite alone, taking a shot at a game that the prior night she didn’t try with everyone around. Removing his coat, Mary gets a bit flustered and is more so when Tom helps her learn the game.

Elsewhere, they share lovely conversations in and about nature and by the low glow of candlelight, Tom helps her with her shawl when she leaves the dinner table.

COUNTING a DANCE

The Episode: Five

In episode five of The Other Bennet Sister, Mary dances the minuet with Tom and it’s all kinds of wholesome.

There is longing there, yes, but mostly it persists in being awkwardly darling. It also shows that these two are, well, quite meant to be. Mary is easy to relate to in this moment as we watch her nervously work through the dance by counting her steps in the hopes she will not embarrass anyone.

We also soon come to see that Tom too is counting as he strives to not miss a single step.

A PROPOSAL

The Episode: Eight

During a trip to the lakes where Mary travels with her aunt and uncle, she finds herself in the company again of Tom. During a relaxing boat ride, Mary finds she is the recipient of a declaration from Tom.

Of course, the moment is interrupted by the persistent William, a man who is also courting Mary. The scene takes a comedic turn when, in what must be in homage to the 1995 Pride and Prejudice series, both men end up in the water and must tow Mary back to shore. Naturally, both end up with their shirts quite undone.

He tries to propose again at a beautiful place where their party hikes only for him to again be interrupted by William who wishes to make an offer to Mary himself.

Despite these interruptions, these scenes are lovely and in particular, Tom’s second chance proposal is full of endless views and gorgeous spaces. (They also have a surprisingly delightful sense of humor.)

LOVE

After Mary has chosen her own path, which includes plans to find an occupation, and Tom disappears, the pair do reunite. He finds her in a gorgeous garden where he begs a chance to explain his disappearance. Mary makes nothing easy for him however and instead of falling into his arms, she angrily asks him how he could “step aside” believing he was giving her a chance at a better offer.

In tears, he makes this declaration as Mary also tells him that she has only ever loved him. A proposal is made and this time, Mary, knowing that Tom heartily shares her love, happily accepts.

This scene is full of so much joy and is quintessentially them.

This beautiful happiness, which does include their marriage, is how we leave them. For now. We can say this because there is a three-part The Other Bennet Sister Christmas special coming, which is sure to chronicle more of the stories and lives of Miss Mary Bennet and Mr. Tom Hayward, along with the rest of the (mostly) lovely Bennet sisters.
