Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence Get a Modern Makeover in New BritBox Mystery Series

Agatha Christie’s often-overlooked detective duo Tommy and Tuppence are returning to television in a new six-part series set in present-day London.

BritBox has released the official trailer for Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence, starring The Good Doctor actress Antonia Thomas and The Buccaneers actor Josh Dylan.

The production marks the first contemporary English-language television adaptation of Christie’s stories, offering a fresh interpretation of two recurring characters whose adventures began more than a century ago.

Christie’s “most underrated” detectives return

Frequently described by readers as two of Christie’s most underrated creations, Tommy and Tuppence first appeared in her 1922 novel The Secret Adversary.

Their story continued across four novels and a collection of short stories. During their adventures, the pair established their own detective agency and were recruited by British Intelligence.

By Christie’s final novel, Postern of Fate, published in 1973, Tommy and Tuppence had retired to the countryside. Their peaceful new life was soon interrupted when they discovered another mystery waiting to be solved in their home.

The new adaptation transports the couple into modern London while retaining the mixture of crime, romance and playful tension that defines their relationship.

According to the official synopsis: “Tommy and Tuppence are a detective duo for the ages. They fall in love, fall out of it, and tumble back in, all while solving some thrilling, entertaining mysteries along the way.”

Antonia Thomas and Josh Dylan lead the cast

Antonia Thomas stars as Tuppence, an actress described as a “force of nature who won’t take no for an answer.”

Josh Dylan plays Tommy, a meticulous and charming crime writer who has lost his passion. His life changes when the unpredictable Tuppence suddenly returns and helps him rediscover it.

The central mystery will unfold alongside their complicated personal relationship, as the pair repeatedly move between romance and disagreement while working together to solve crimes.

Imelda Staunton joins as Aunt Ada

Imelda Staunton, known for her roles in Harry Potter and the Paddington films, appears as Tommy’s Aunt Ada.

The character is a retired private detective described as a witty and formidable personality. She is deeply fond of her great-nephew because he never attempts to undermine her—something only a fool would dare to do.

The supporting cast includes Nicholas Richardson, whose credits include Wu-Tang: An American Saga and Younger, alongside Doctor Who and Unforgotten actor Charlie Condou.

Callie Cooke, known for F1 and Cheaters, also appears, with Little Disasters and The Woman in the Wall star Chizzy Akudolu completing the announced ensemble.

An experienced creative team behind the adaptation

Phoebe Eclair-Powell, whose previous work includes The Road Trip and Harm, has written the six-part drama.

Directing duties are shared by Fergus O’Brien, known for Happy Valley and The Tourist, and Ellie Heydon, whose credits include Outrageous and Trying.

Their involvement brings together experience in mystery, character drama and comedy—three elements that have always been central to Tommy and Tuppence’s adventures.

Rather than simply recreating the original period setting, the production places Christie’s characters in the present day, allowing their unconventional partnership and investigative methods to unfold against a contemporary London backdrop.

Agatha Christie’s Tommy & Tuppence will premiere on BritBox on September 15.

The release date coincides with Agatha Christie’s birthday, offering fans a new interpretation of one of the celebrated author’s longest-running—but frequently overlooked—detective partnerships.
