The 2009 adaptation of Emily Brontë’s romance novel Wuthering Heights is available to stream on ITVX – and fans are hailing it “the best series of all time”. The two-part mini-series explores the twisted bond between a young Cathy Earnshaw (Charlotte Riley) and her adopted brother, Heathcliffe (Tom Hardy), as it evolves into love and obsession.

Their chemistry is palpable through the screen as the heartbreaking story is told in this passionate adaptation. Actors Charlotte and Tom met on the set of the highly-rated period drama and started dating soon after. They married in 2014 after The Dark Knight Rises star Tom proposed in 2010, and the couple has two children.

Their haunting version of Wuthering Heights has an 84 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers sharing stellar reviews.

One fan said: “As a former English teacher and lover of classic British Literature, I have to say that this version is by far my favourite. It stays closely in line with the novel, the acting is fantastic, and there is true passion, chemistry, and deep love between this Heathcliff and Catherine.

“Tom Hardy as the tormented lover is phenomenal. This version has brought me to tears more than once. Also, the passion and intimacy are well done and not disgustingly raunchy as they are in the latest Margot Robbi version.”

Another penned: “This is one of, if not the best series of all time. So much better than the new depiction of Wuthering Heights!”

Someone else shared: “By far the best adaptation I have seen. Not perfect, but a mostly faithful retelling. Tom Hardy is a very good Heathcliffe, and you can never go wrong with casting Burn Gorman as a villain or complex character like Hindley.”
