Fans of classic literature and sweeping period dramas have another acclaimed adaptation to add to their watchlist.

The Count of Monte Cristo, the 2024 adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s celebrated 1844 novel, is now available to stream for free on BBC iPlayer after being divided into four parts.

The film has been widely praised by viewers, with some describing it as a “masterpiece” and one of the finest adaptations of the timeless story.

A story of betrayal, imprisonment and revenge

Pierre Niney leads the cast as Edmond Dantes, a young sailor whose life is shattered when he is falsely accused of treason on his wedding day.

Dantes is imprisoned in a fortress, where he remains captive for more than a decade. After finally managing to escape, he reinvents himself as a wealthy Count and assumes a new identity.

But freedom is only the beginning.

Living under his carefully constructed disguise, Dantes sets out to track down the people responsible for his downfall and exact revenge on those who betrayed him.

The BBC synopsis describes the story as an epic tale of “betrayal, love and vengeance”, centred on a man who is falsely accused and imprisoned for 15 years before emerging with revenge in mind.

Viewers have called it a masterpiece

The 2024 film became a major hit following its original premiere, and its arrival on BBC iPlayer has given audiences another opportunity to experience the adaptation in its four-part format.

Viewer reactions have been overwhelmingly positive.

One fan described it as an “excellent adaptation” of Dumas’s novel, while another simply called it “absolutely terrific”.

Others were even more enthusiastic, with one viewer branding the film a “masterpiece” and another saying they “truly loved” it despite not being an avid movie watcher.

That viewer went as far as calling it one of the best films they had ever seen.

For fans already familiar with Dumas’s story, the adaptation has also been warmly received. One viewer described it as a “dream come true for Monte Cristo fans”, while another review was titled “Absolutely stunning”.

Several viewers have urged others to seek it out, with one calling it “unmissible” and praising the film for maintaining its tension from beginning to end.

“I was absolutely captivated by the film from start to finish,” the viewer wrote, adding that every moment kept them on the edge of their seat.

Another praised it as “a gorgeous modern production of timeless epic”, while a further viewer simply described the film as “spectacular”.

Pierre Niney initially doubted the film would happen

Despite the eventual success of the project, Pierre Niney revealed that he was initially far less confident about the adaptation.

Speaking to Forbes, the French actor recalled being “pessimistic” when the project was first being developed.

He remembered thinking that the film would not be made because of the enormous challenge involved in adapting such a lengthy novel.

Niney said he initially believed it was “too good to be true”, particularly given the difficulty of finding the money and people willing to take on a story spanning a 1,200-page book.

However, the finished film exceeded even his expectations.

According to Niney, the final result was “even better than what I had imagined”, making the project something he expected would remain in his memory forever.

Now, with the film available in four parts on BBC iPlayer, viewers can experience the latest screen adaptation of Dumas’s enduring tale of betrayal, love and revenge.
