A ‘masterfully done’ period drama that has been dubbed ‘the next Call the Midwife’ is currently available for free on ITVX.

Three Little Birds, which premiered on ITV in October 2023, may have slipped under the radar of some viewers.

Penned by Sir Lenny Henry, this six-part series follows the journey of three women who leave Jamaica to start anew in Britain during the 1950s.

Sisters Leah and Chantrelle, along with their acquaintance Hosanna, initially settle in London’s Notting Hill before relocating to the Midlands.

The drama delves into the often overlooked experiences of the Windrush Generation, a wave of Caribbean natives who migrated to the UK post-WWII, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Rochelle Neil, known from Sky One’s Das Boot, stars as Leah. EastEnders alum Saffron Coomber portrays her sister Chantrelle, while newcomer Yazmin Belo plays their “bible-loving” friend Hosanna.

Critics were immediately captivated by the historical drama, awarding it an impressive 88% Rotten Tomatoes score. One reviewer lauded the show as “masterfully done,” while another praised it as “an essential and personal drama”.

Viewers on IMDb echoed these sentiments, with one fan likening it to ‘the next Call the Midwife’.

The same fan elaborated: “Sensational. I just love the film sets, costumes, acting and scripts. I am seriously binge watching this series!”

They further added: “Not to be missed. I hope the series continues and the characters develop.”

Another viewer enthused: “The series is beautifully written and the entire cast is superb. They are a true ensemble and every episode has you on the edge of your seat, wondering what comes next.

“It runs the gamut of emotions, and is a binge-worthy series. I watched the entire thing in one sitting. I couldn’t stop.”

Despite its popularity, Three Little Birds was axed after just one season.

Henry expressed his disappointment with ITV’s decision. In an interview with The Guardian, he stated: “These days, it seems that many black dramas only get one series, there are numerous examples of this – and sadly, Three Little Birds is just one more in that same category.”
