‘Masterpiece’ BBC period drama is ‘best show you never watched’ (Image: BBC)

Despite its popularity, it remains one of the lesser known period dramas compared to its counterparts including Downton Abbey and Poldark. The series Versailles built up a loyal fans base when it premiered in 2015. The BBC Two series starred Alexander Vlahos, who played Phillipe, Duke of Orleans and George Blagden as Louis XIV in the royal court drama.

Now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, the show synopsis reads: “The year is 1667. King Louis XIV of France is 28 and finally in sole command of his kingdom.

Welcome to a world of power and betrayal, love, lust and declarations of war, where courtiers battle for the King’s favour. This is Versailles in all its brutal glory.”

The historical drama is set during the construction of the Palace of Versailles during the reign of Louis XIV. A co-production between France, Canada, the United Kingdom and United States.

The Los Angeles Times dubbed it “the best show you probably never watched” while the Guardian called it a “trashy, extravagant romp”.

San Francisco Chronicle hailed the series as “powerful and compelling characters [that] hold our attention”, and Collider said “it’s fun, pure and simple”.

While some audience reviewers have claimed the series is underrated, many have also dubbed the show a “masterpiece”.

An IMDb user said: “For Lovers of History who can forgive some inaccuracy for decadence and intrigue. Absolutely love this show.”
