A ‘beautiful’ film, centred on the life of one of Wales’ most cherished stars, will be aired tonight on the BBC. The period drama pays tribute to the life and career of Welsh icon and international superstar Richard Burton, earning praise as ‘beautiful’ from fans.
The biographical film about his early life, Mr Burton, features standout performances by Toby Jones and Harry Lawtey, and will be broadcast tonight, Monday 10 November at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
The film delves into the true story of the relationship between Welsh schoolmaster Philip Burton and a rebellious young pupil named Richard Jenkins. The cast includes Harry Lawtey as a young Burton, Toby Jones as his teacher Philip Burton, and Lesley Manville as Burton’s housekeeper.
The BAFTA Cymru-winning film also features Aimee-Ffion Edwards as Cis, Aneurin Bernard as her husband Elfed, and Steffan Rhodri as Burton’s father.
Set in Port Talbot in 1942, the film follows Richard Jenkins (Harry Lawtey), a wayward schoolboy torn between his struggling family, the ravages of war, and his own aspirations. However, when Richard’s natural flair for drama catches the eye of his teacher, Philip Burton (BAFTA winner Toby Jones), a new opportunity presents itself, reports the Mirror.

Under the stern mentorship of Philip and the nurturing care of amiable landlady, Ma Smith (Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville, The Crown), Richard flourishes. However, as he edges closer to his acting dreams, the weight of his past threatens to hinder his progress indefinitely.
One reviewer on the film critique site Rotten Tomatoes awarded it five stars, writing: “Very well done. If you had any idea of who you thought Richard Burton was this movie will dispel everything. A true story and a very human one. Great film and excellent acting especially by Mr Burton!”.

“Beautiful film! Harry Lawtey (of Industry fame) is magnificent – despite big Burton shoes to fill. He transitions from gawky teen to acclaimed actor with great finesse, and what a voice!
