‘Amazing’ period drama is ‘comfort movie’ perfect for fans of Sherlock
Sherlock captivated viewers retelling the tales of the famed detective Sherlock Holmes, and this period drama puts a whole new spin on the popular story
Fans of Sherlock will love this period drama, taking on a modern twist of much-loved characters and introducing viewers to a whole new adventure.
The family-friendly film made quite an impression on viewers when it made its exclusive launch on Netflix in 2020, and it was universally praised as a “captivating” film.
Enola Holmes is a mystery film with Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, now 22, starring as the title character and the younger teenage sister of the famed detective Sherlock Holmes in the Victorian era. The film transports audiences back in time but offers a world entirely of its own, set against the backdrop of 19th-century England.
The story begins when Enola wakes up on her 16th birthday to find that her free-spirited mother, played by Harry Potter actress and British legend Helena Bonham Carter, had gone missing. In her absence, the teenager is left in the care of her two brothers, Sherlock and Mycroft, played by heartthrobs Henry Cavill and Sam Claflin.
Refusing to live there in obedience and boredom and wait for her mother’s return, Enola takes it upon herself to decode hidden messages left by her mother and makes an escape to London. On the train she befriends another runaway, and together they form a meaningful friendship as they take on the chaos that London brings.
A fan of the film shared a review on Rotten Tomatoes, writing: “Enola Holmes is an amazing and entertaining film that brings a fresh spin to the famous Holmes family by focusing on Sherlock’s younger sister.
“It offers a fun mix of mystery, adventure, and character-driven storytelling that keeps things engaging throughout. Millie Bobby Brown delivers a strong and charismatic performance, making Enola a clever, independent, and likeable lead.”
Another viewer said: “This is honestly one of my comfort movies and one of my favourites as a self-proclaimed Holmesian. It is absolutely wonderful and the historical details they included have stuck with me, showing they clearly do their research.”
Although one criticism of Enola Holmes is the way in which the main character breaks the fourth wall and often addresses the camera to make witty remarks. This style of storytelling isn’t traditional and certainly not for everyone, with one critic labelling it “super annoying.”
Despite this review, Enola Holmes proved to be a triumph for Netflix as they went on to make a sequel, Enola Holmes 2, released two years later. The film saw this A-list cast return to the screen yet again, and fans had plenty of praise to give.
One review reads: “Enola Holmes 2 is a fun, confident sequel that builds naturally on the charm of the first film while expanding its world and stakes. Millie Bobby Brown once again proves she owns the role, delivering a sharp, energetic performance that balances wit, intelligence, and emotional growth.”
For those eager to see Millie Bobby Brown shine in one of her first leading roles on film, Enola Holmes and Enola Holmes 2 are both available to stream now on Netflix.
