Pitt portrays Tristan Ludlow, son of disenchanted US cavalry officer Colonel William Ludlow (portrayed by Anthony Hopkins) who relocates his family to isolated Montana to establish a ranch, assisted by his Cree companion One Stab (Gordon Tootoosis).
After Tristan and his siblings Alfred (Aidan Quinn) and Samuel (Henry Thomas) join the Canadian Expeditionary Force and deploy to the First World War, their father is heartbroken, and a subsequent tragedy triggers a devastating chain reaction that gradually tears the family apart over the following years, reports the Mirror.

Helmed by Edward Zwick (Shakespeare in Love) and adapted from Jim Harrison’s 1979 novella, this 1994 epic remains an overlooked treasure in both Pitt and Hopkins’ body of work, though it maintains a devoted following who insist it deserves attention.
Poldark devotees will discover much to appreciate in Legends of the Fall given the Ludlows’ Cornish heritage, while those who admired the expansive Montana vistas of Yellowstone and The Madison ought to add it to their viewing list as well.
One IMDb reviewer made a striking assertion in their 10/10 review: “Despite some of the reviews, I think this film is one of the best ever made. I have seen it a hundred times. The sweeping score, the Montana backdrop and the plot are just some of the things that make this film great.

“This film immediately became one of my all-time favourites; I’ve watched it half a dozen times since then and its scope and power never fail to move me.”
