ITV audiences were delighted when a fresh period drama debuted on the channel in 2019.

Penned by Andrew Davies, Sanditon charts the journey of Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams), who departs her countryside dwelling for the tranquil fishing settlement of Sanditon, seeking personal transformation.

Yet upon Charlotte’s arrival, she becomes embroiled in turmoil as she navigates a tempest of controversies involving both the eccentric residents and affluent holidaymakers.

A synopsis states: “Set during a period of great social and economic change, the town’s ambitious developer, Tom Parker, and his wealthy backer, Lady Denham, want to transform Sanditon into a fashionable resort.

“Charlotte arrives in the town and quickly finds herself caught up in the complex lives, scandals, and romantic entanglements of the quirky locals and wealthy visitors.”

The costume drama, which concluded in 2023 following three series, draws from Jane Austen’s incomplete manuscript, which she began in 1817, reports Bristol Live.

Following eleven and a half chapters, the celebrated novelist ceased work on the manuscript, with widespread speculation attributing this to declining health as she tragically died that same year.

Principal photography took place in Bristol, with the imaginary coastal settlement constructed at Bristol’s Bottle Yard Studios. Additional notable filming sites include John Wesley’s New Room and The Georgian House Museum.
