51-year-old Californian singer Matt Mauser came to America’s Got Talent with a sob story set to outshine any other. Auditioning for Season 16 in 2021, Matt took to the stage like an unsuspecting and average bloke: no extravagant stage dress, props, or gimmicks to speak of – just a button-shirted man holding a microphone. But when Matt unleashed his voice, both in story and song, he shocked the judges beyond belief.
Matt didn’t just steal the judges’ hearts with his performance but stunned the entire internet with his story and voice; his AGT audition amassing more than 4.9 million YouTube views to date. Music Man readers can watch Matt’s viral audition in the clip below and read on to uncover his harrowing story.
Matt reveals to the judges that he and his wife Christina were both schoolteachers who retired to finally embrace their dream careers. Matt became a full-time musician, while Christina took hold of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to coach girls’ basketball alongside the iconic Kobe Bryant (cue Simon Cowell’s expression of utter disbelief).

But in January 2020, disaster struck the couple when Christina was killed in the same helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant. Christina and Matt had been together since 2004, bonding over music before marrying and raising three young children together. Matt reveals his last memory of his wife, saying “I love you” before she walked out the door, leaving the reminiscing singer on the verge of tears as he recounted his family’s pain.
As awful as his story is, Matt embodies true fatherly strength as he tells how he picked up the pieces and continues raising his three kids alone, keeping their mother’s memory intact.
With Matt’s children looking sorrowful on the sidelines of the AGT stage, it’s astounding how much joy their presence brings to Matt’s face as Simon Cowell waves ‘hello’ to them from the judges’ panel.
Matt then dedicates his cover of Christina’s favorite Phil Collins song, “Against All Odds,” to his late wife, stunning the crowd into silence with his surprisingly powerful voice. You can hear the pain in his vocals after tracing his wife’s memory. Yet he absolutely nails his performance, giving brand new, heart-crushing meaning to the lyrics: “Take a look at me now / There’s just an empty space / And there’s nothing left here to remind me / Just the memory of your face.”

As his voice breaks on his final lyrics, all four AGT judges give Matt a standing ovation, before spreading their love for the singer’s moving performance.
Don’t miss Matt’s inspiring message of hope at the end of this clip, before the judges give Matt four Yes votes, sending him straight through to the next stage of the show!
