Netflix’s new period drama welcomes Enola Homes legend
Netflix has announced its all-star cast for a best-selling book remake.
Netflix has assembled an impressive roster of talent for its upcoming adaptation of a “mysterious” period drama.
Earlier this year, Netflix revealed its new period drama Bad Bridgets would feature Locke and Key’s Emilia Jones and Wuthering Heights’ Alison Oliver in leading roles.
The Irish drama’s ensemble has now expanded significantly with the addition of Banshees of Inisherin’s Colin Farrell, Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton and Alan Partridge icon Steve Coogan.
Further notable casting includes About Time’s Domhnall Gleeson, Enola Holmes actor Himesh Patel, The Irish Affair’s Niamh Algar and Kneecap star Simone Kirby.
Bad Bridgets draws from the book Bad Bridget: Crime, Mayhem and the Lives of Irish Emigrant Women by academics Elaine Farrell and Leanne McCormick.
The academics coined the term “bad bridget” to describe destitute Irish girls and women who emigrated to America and Canada seeking better prospects but frequently encountered hardship instead.
The Netflix adaptation centres on a young Irish woman’s journey as she pursues a fresh start in 19th-century New York.
The official synopsis states: “When a mysterious letter offering escape leads a young Irish woman to 19th-century New York, she is pulled into the unruly world of the Bridgets, where mayhem follows in her wake.”
No official release date has been confirmed yet, though production is anticipated to commence in Ireland and Northern Ireland this month.
Bad Bridgets has been written, directed and produced by BAFTA winner Rich Peppiatt, whose previous work includes films such as Kneecap and One Rogue Reporter.
He’s reunited with Kneecap collaborator and fellow BAFTA winner Ryan Kernaghan, who serves as cinematographer, while Poor Things’ Academy Award winner James Price takes on the role of production designer.
The project is being developed with backing from Queen’s University Belfast and produced with financial support from Northern Ireland Screen.
Bad Bridgets will be available to stream on Netflix.
