Billed as a “gripping thriller” featuring “many twists and turns”, the programme centres on suburban mother Angela (Joanne), whose apparently perfect life is shattered following an encounter with a mysterious stranger, reports the Mirror.
“Angela Black’s life appears idyllic: a lovely house in suburban London, days working as a volunteer at the dogs home, two wonderful sons and a charismatic, hard-working husband, Olivier (Michiel Huisman). However, beneath this façade of charmed domesticity, Angela is also the victim of domestic abuse,” reads the synopsis.
“Trapped in a relationship she cannot escape, Angela is approached out of the blue by Ed (Samuel Adewunmi), a private investigator, who spills Olivier’s darkest secrets.
“When faced with some horrifying truths about her husband, a stunned Angela is left reeling. Can she really trust Ed? Can she leave behind her life as she knows it and finally free herself from Olivier?”
The programme has proved enormously popular with audiences, with one describing it as “spellbinding” on review platform Rotten Tomatoes, while another commented: “I cannot stop watching this series. It’s captivating and has been a great several evenings of TV.”
A further viewer remarked on IMDb.com that it represented “one of the best TV series for quite a while”. “I am a tough audience when it comes to TV shows like this, but this story line is gripping!” one viewer remarked.
“Great character development, tight, suspenseful plotting and powerful performances all round,” another said, continuing: “Nothing is wasted – no lull in the middle episodes, this builds to one hell of a climax that, true to form, avoids many of the cliches of the genre.”
One fan described it as “a great, binge worthy psychological thriller that isn’t what it initially appears to be with suspense and plot twists throughout”.
Someone else labelled it “brutal and gritty”, while another commented it “made me watch to the very end”.
“Another Joanne Froggatt excellent series, dark and menacing,” a further viewer observed, with one adding: “One of those where you can’t blink.”
